View Full Version : rear shock reliability

I am planning to join this century and replace the Rock Shox coil rear shock on my OLD Santa Cruz Heckler with a current air shock. My concern and question is about reliability. I have heard good and bad things about Fox and Progressive shocks. I hear they are great, you will love them, makes it a whole new bike... I have also heard they leak, they last five hours before you have to send them back...

Any input would be appreciated. For the record, I am an XC rider who doesn't beat on his stuff very hard although I do come in in the 200 lb range...

Thanx!

I wasn't sold on air shocks until I got my Cake with a Manitou 3-Way air shock. I can honestly say, that I'm impressed with this whole stable platform shock thing. All of my previous FS bikes had been coil over shocks. I had been hearing good things about the stable platform and when I decided to get a new bike, I wanted a stable platform. I have the shock tuned so that is performs like my coil over and pedals nicely.

I just put a new Scareb fork on the bike with the stable platform stuff and was amazed at the difference. That is why I am looking to do the same for the rear! Should breath some new life into this beloved dinosaur.

You'll love stable platform! Accelerate like a hard tail, plush in the rocks.

Hey Heckler, My Heckler is a 2000 give or take. I put the Fox Vanilla R 130 fork on it and boy is it plush. It has a Fox Vanilla rear air shock right now and suffers from a bit of peddle bob. I just can't see punting on such a sweet frame when the new technology of shocks can clean up the old ride. I was think of the Swinger 3-way for the rear shock.

Mine is a '96! Designed for 3" forks. I do love it but with the new fork I can tell how nice that technology would be on the rear. I am looking for a good deal on a Swinger 3 way. I agree that seems like a great shock. I have heard problems with their shock pump removal but I think I have a good one that will avoid that issue.

I have a 3-way on my Cake, and I'm truly sold on the stable platform thing. I'm even considering it for my freeride bike, although I'm not sure about reliability with big impacts.

Going to have to change my name! I just picked up a used Superlight last night!!!! This one already has an air shock on it but it is an older Fox. I am still jonesin' for a 3-way!

Hey Super-Heckler,
I know someone that may be interested in buying your Heckler frame. Let me know if you are interested in selling.

In fact, I am interested. I figured I would try to sell the whole thing as a back-up bike for someone, or a nice rig for somebody just getting into the game but if the price were right, I could definitely see parting it out! Just put a brand new bearing set in this weekend even. Talk to me!
