The count down begins...regular forum watchers have probably come across a few threads concerning new trails at Wendell---we've been working hard to lay in some brand new singletrack up here in this big, beautiful state forest...and now, we're nearing Wendell's big debut.
Sunday, July 24th--if you haven't ridden it yet-will be the day to sink your teeth into Wendell.
And there is plenty of something for everyone.
1. advanced xc riders--well, they're (we're) the easiest to please...we have bony technical trails and some fast swoopy trails, stunning lookouts, legit climbing...you won't be disapointed.
2. Beginners and Novices: The other night we lead a real mixed group of 14 around Wendell and discovered some really nice level singletrack weaving through forests, around picturesque lakes...the dirt/fire roads in Wendell are actually a blast to ride...maintained (for the most part) well-enough for easy pedaling but they offer jumping excitement as well. We'll have a fairly lengthy section of beginner trails.
3. Freeriders; O.K, nothing exactly north shore, but we've opened up and incorporated some really smooth rock jumps and drops...a couple with 8 ft of verticle...not too shabby...so keep your eyes peeled for alternate steep and technical lines laced along all the new trails...we're pretty sure you'll find more than enough extras beyond your standard xc riding fare.
Just want to hang out while your friends/family/sig. other rides??...Wendell has a truly lovely swimming pond/picnic and barbecue area at ruggles pond (right in the main area of the park)...and some great hiking as well.
We're pretty sure the after party will be at the nearby/ handy 'Roadhouse' (don't worry, Patrick Swayze really cleaned that joint up!) in downtown Millers Falls.
So no matter what your poison, we think you'll find it at Wendell so mark your calendars and c'mon out on Sunday July 24th.

So, we're laying out the beginner, adv, and hero loops over the next two weeks, doing some trail grooming, and, best of all--we've locked the after party location..it'll be the very handy Route 63 Roadhouse in Miller's Falls. Less than 5 minutes from the park and on the way back for anyone using rte 2 or 63 to get to the event.
They'll have the bonus event of an outdoor Blue Grass band playing whilst you slurp down your Harpoon IPA!!!
Should be a swell time! Mark your calendars--Sunday July 24th at Wendell SF on Montague/Wendell rd in..where else Wendell, MA!!!
Any questions--give me a shout

BigMac and I were out polishing the trail a bit this morning.
Added benefit for those attending the ride next weekend is the native low bush blueberries which will be at peak season. One of nature's best (and sweetest) antioxidants just waiting to be enjoyed trailside.
The singletrack in Wendell is literally some of the sweetest around!
Bring your pail, and hope the bears don't pick all the bushes clean before next weekend.

Inching ever closer--Next Sunday July 24th will be the harpoon-Topeak Adventure series ride at Wendell SF...man, we spent the morning riding and scouting the beginner, advanced and hero loops and I think we have something really special for riders of all levels up in Wendell. Mark Courtemanche and Harold Green logged in three 5:00am in the morning work days this week alone-just de-punji-ing the hannah Swarton Trail and getting everything up to snuff--come on out and ride it next weekend (registration is from 9-11:00am)...Remeber-Harpoon sponsors a blue grass afterparty at the rte 63 roadhouse in Miller's Falls after the ride!
See ya there!

Rain or Shine I should add...but I'm thinking it'll be shine--either way it will be worthwhile--so bring a friend, a family member and a friend's family member and get out to Wendell for the Harpoon Ride!

For you Roadies, or those attached to Roadies.
Wendell State Forest is smack dab in the middle of two of my favorite loops that we do out of Greenfield. I'll bring cue sheets along in case anyone is interested in riding the roads instead of (or in addition to) our trails.
Loops are 30 to 40 miles, with plenty of climbing!!

I posted this yesterday on another thread. Probably should have been here under events.
It is the most likely trail routing for all XC riders on Sunday. The only possible exception is we may use the West Wickett Pond Trail depending on how dry both trails are. These trails were built in the past two years by Americorps and run really close to the pond edge. If the pond water is very high the east side trail never drys out. We will probably make that decision on Sunday morning.

Message removed. Liam -- you might want to re-post that message, it was the best trail description of Wendell I've seen.

Mark--I don't think you needed to delete that email--I believe Truckboy's complaints were tongue in cheek.
I certainly don't mind---though, I wouldn't mind touching up the spelling--I do try to take a little more care in the prose and grammar of my public postings than my quick email responses!!

what time do the group rides generally start? and whats the distance approximately?

registration is from 9:00am to 11:00am. The rides are somewhat self-guided. We've hung a plethora of Pink directional arrows that indicate the beginner and advanced (and a HERO) routes. You'll surely find a group to ride with if you hang around. Or bring your own group, or ride solo---we don't organize the 'groups'--that's up to the riders who attend.
Anyway, going over the markers this morning the routes will be easy and fun to follow ---see ya tomorrow.
