View Full Version : Bear Brook II, the super ride.

Sorry for not posting this regionally but this ride is up there with the best ov'em'. We will try to repeat the success of last years super ride at Bear Brook. The ride last year showed 30 riders an area under theat by ATV advocates and this year is even worse when it comes to threat.
Last year Nhiker and oldbroad were instrumental in supplying tired riders with a fresh meal. It would be nice if someone else would take the reins and supply a grill or two and others to help out with meats. I will again supply the condiments etc for the cookout.
This is a joint forum adventure between members of MTBR and NEMBA forum regulars.

We are looking at July 10 at the moment. July 9 was the first thought, we have more interest on the 10th.

If it's the 10th, I'm in and can supply the grill (2 of 'em) and take up the grilling duties.

Of course you have been a factor in this change along with the good people of Maine. You need not slave alone if this works out. Thank you Scott.

I'm in, too, if the condiment man can expand his horizons.
I'm assuming you break the ride into smaller groups? Because 30 people is a recipe for a major clusterbind.
epic-rider, Art Vandelay is the greatest!

Breaking the group will most likely be a good idea, last year we didn't, we got away with it but it was risky. Could this be jerseygirls first day back on the MTB? We'll take an inventory from both forums in regard to food etc. Expand my horizions? Oh yes, i'll bring some water.

epic-rider, your avatar is very disturbing. How about making it 1/10 the size so I don't have to see the details of Gene's tongue?
Gene??? All I see is George.

Gene is dead. Long live George!!! I got whammied by the Radair Police. I guess bigger really isn't better. Ask George: "I just got out of the shower."

Chief Radair. I like that- hope it sticks! Can't say I blame you about Gene though, he IS an aquired taste. Who's Art Vandelay? Was he with New Kids on the Block?
Jerseygirl, you don't know the half of it. Cold water and spandex bike shorts...
Seinfeld fan???

I have been graced with planning the route again this year.
The short loop will be around 10-13 miles and the long will be 17+. Bail out points everywhere. We will be hitting all the cool trails.
I want to ride with people who would be in the fast group and the slower group. Sometimes I end up in the front half, sometimes the back half. So this is how I think it should be.
We will have two group leaders with detailed maps and a full list of names with everyone on the ride. If someone drops off, we scratch them off. The two groups will meet up at certain points so people can switch groups and what not. We will also have radios with someone in the front of each group and the back.
One cool thing about keeping the group together is that we all have to wait the same amount of time to eat. If the group is managable then there won't be an issue. At least 10 riders that are going I know personally and we could easily keep any size group together.
I will have lots of water and goodies half way through the ride.
No one should be scared of this ride. The ultimate theme is to meet new riders. That is one reason it is multi forum. I myself made many new riding buds that I ride with all the time now. I know Bear Brook very well and can get anyone out of the woods at any point pretty easily. Feel free to come even if your are a novice rider.

I wasn't around for last years ride, but I'm-a-comin to this one. Two groups sounds like a good idea- I'll take the back of the slow group.

It's a 10 am start time with your birthday party after. ;) If you would like to bring some type of salad that would work.

More stupid questions:
Where is the meeting point, and more importantly, How do I get there?

Directions here, www.nhstateparks.org/parkspages/bearbrook/bearbrkdrct.html. We will meet at the hiker/biker parking lot this is about a mile after the booth where you pay the park fee. Take a right on Podunk road and the parking is down on the right.

Hey, is this becoming a SS ride? I want to make sure to bring the right rig, and don't really want to leave a bike in my car.

Oh there are those with broadend horizions yes? For me it will be an SS ride, to be with those who wish to relax and just "spin".

I have no idea what that means, but "relax and just spin" and an SS ride seem to be mutually exclusive.

I will be loaning my FS ride out for BB. I therfore will ride the rigid SS for the day. There has been reference by others on the board that lead me to believe that "spinning" is an easy ride and I hope that is what I am in for with my fat arse on Sunday.

SS will be fine Radair unless it is super hot out. Bring yourself an appetite after the ride. This barbecue will be huge.

We have to be looking at 40+ riders now. I can count over 20 and that doesn't include the people who are silent. Last year there was 30.

I'll be 'pasturing' my geared bike on sunday, so I'll be rigid SS too! (Actually, I need to bring my road bike and the SS down to the cape on friday and won't have room for or time to go home to get the geared bike before BB...) I hope I'm not as sore as I was after the Lynn Woods ride... The muscles between my shoulder blades hurt for a week after that one :o

With 50+ riders i'm glad we didn't have any major problems. What a great showing from the State of Maine this year that was great to see. Thanks to all who made the cookout what it was, Peter the corn was a hit. Severum needs to be recognized for laying out a great route to the "middle" group. Thanks to Peter for leading the insane group and epic-rider for leading the more casual group, including me.
This year as far as I can tell we have representatives from NH, VT, ME and MA. And oh yeah the state of North Conway.
