View Full Version : Singlespeed ride: Monday June 20th

I'm leading my first official NEMBA group ride next monday...and it's a singlespeed ride! No, you don't need a singlespeed to come along - but you will have to have a derailleur, cassette, and granny ring whose feelings aren't easily hurt ;D

I'm hoping to make this ride a good time for all, and as such would like some input. The only thing set about the ride so far is the date. I can make it out any time after 3:00. Places I can get to: Fort Rock, Mt. A, FOMBA.

So - if anyone's planning on coming on this ride, I would love some input about where and when you'd like the ride to be. I'm hoping this ride will allow me to meet a bunch of you guys!

I could do a 5pm Fomba ride, I think.

5:30 at Fort Rock or Aggie works for me, but... but, If its called a single speed ride...then duh..no gears for queers! I say we duct tape all shifters... no screw that, if its a SS ride then be a man and lay down the law Paw, don't be nice. I ride with mixed groups all the time....boring... my vote is for SS only! otherwise its just a plain old, run of the mill, "ride" with the singlespeeders wwaaayyyy out front or in contrast stuck behind some super slow poke geared bike in granny...aaarggh!

I vote for SS only!

I would be down for this, but Mondays are trail building/bug feeding/beer drinking nights, and the 20th may see completion of the latest project.

Another time, another place. I want to do a SS only ride.

I'm interested, but would need to know how much driving time coming from south of Boston. Anyone know what time I'd need to be on the road leaving time for traffic etc?

In my experience, you should probably leave Sunday night.

I would give yourself a good 2 hours, for either venue.
Once P.A.W. decides the locale, we could give directions, spots to avoid, etc.

CP, coming from south of Boston at that time of day I'd say about two hours, but give yourself two and a half just in case. If you need directions, lemme know.

Well, it seems like a Fort Rock SS only ride is what will work for the most people. So we'll plan on meeting at the parking area by the train trestle at 5:30 pm. With Todd as my enforcer, all shifting cables will be cut prior to starting the ride ;) Now just pray, chant, meditate, sacrifice (or whatever you do) so that we get some drier air and the slime coating comes off all the rocks in time for the ride!

ps - Mink, is the SS going to be finished by monday?

CP-I've made it home from Providence (Brown U.) in 1.5 hours with moderate traffic around 95/93 intersection.
Barring no major accidents, you should be able to make it in under 2 hours.
Let me or Jason know if you need directions.

Last I looked, they're talking a dry sunday and monday, and a chance of a dry saturday. Ft. Rock is a lot more fun when the rocks aren't covered in grease!

So you're coming then, Mink? I'll be running rigid. Just got my new headset last night so the SS is back in action.

2.5 hours from south Boston!!!?? That would put CP up past Portland Maine! I agree with Dan 1.5hrs...now if it was a Friday, well that's another story.

Fyi- I've alerted another 8 SSers about this ride that don't regularly visit the forum, we might have a good size gang for the Seacoast's first official SINGLE SPEED ONLY RIDE!

Some of my wise ass friends who want to get into the action are saying things like-" but I only use one gear at a time"

Warning- Toddski will be bringing a bag of monkey poop. If at any time a geared bike gets within throwing distance. I will be flinging monkey poop at you.

You know Todd, it's talk like this that makes people think of SSers as elitist snobs. I prefer just passing people on uphills while they're having shifting problems and remarking, "Sounds like your shifter thingy could use a trash heap." Or, "Do you mind if I ride ahead of you? There's a hill coming up and I'd hate for my front tire to get caught up in your shifter thingy." ;)

I'll be saving some extra sticky stinky monkey poop for you PAW.

Lets just hope that Troy who won the VT50 and Mr.Noble who both ride like machines on auto pilot take pity us mere mortals, I know I'll have a hard enough time staying out of the way of that runaway locomotive on fire.

If you've got room for one more I might be able to make it, maybe I could carpool from around the Foxboro area with CP? This is all contigent on me getting out of work early though. CP if you read this PM me, or I'll see you at Foxboro tonight if you make the ride.

Bdee,

check your pm. A carpool is doable from the "south of boston" area. 1.5 hrs sounds about right to me, we'll leave a little extra time in there for sure...

AOF or Record - I'll take you up on some driving directions coming from Boston.

Thanks for the tour, I had a great time! (even with the flat to start things out right ::)) The trails were a blast and I'm glad no one fell into the green swamp water, especially CP, or that would've been a long ride home. Set the date and time for Great Brook. With some advance warning I should be able to escape work early enough to get up there.

How long did you guys ride for? I would love to latch on to one of your rides sometime. Though it is a bit far from southern NH and MA, I would be willing to lead one up here (the CT river valley) if you wanted. There are a couple of candidate rides, it just depends on how long you want to ride. If the next one is at FOMBA, I may be able to make it down.

Cheers SSnoob.

Lynn Woods was fun on the SS! I only know one man who can give a killer Lynn tour, and he doesn't have a SS....yet. I'm working on him ;)

Best cure for a Singlator malfunction: Horizontal dropouts, EBB, or ENO hub. Dan - if you need some help convincing your wife, let Todd know. He'll bring his monkey poop and you'll be rid of the singleator lickety split.

Hey AOF:

Go easy on that singleator!!!

Is that the second time for that thing? I've seen some posts that people run them permanently with a wire tie instead of the spring. Bdee uses a derailleur. I might do that with my trek. I need a rigid fork though.

Yup, that was the second time.

Works great with the velcro strap from my crud catcher.

I'm working on aquiring a new SS specific bike, it will probably have big boy wheels.

Anyone interested in a 21" XC hardtail?
I still have all the geared crap for it, derailluers, shifters, what some would consider important.
Has XT/LX mix, Bontrager Race Lite tubeless wheelset, Avid Mechanical Disc brakes, RS Judy fork.
Or a beefier wheelset (XT hubs laced to Sun Rhyno Lites).

Probably the same as a KM, my buddy just bought one from 'em.

Almost want to get a Ted Wocjik or a IF (dreaming), but a KM or the Rig are within reach.

I'm convinced a 29er SS is were its at.

I have no need for a geared bike anymore!

I have begun to feel the same way. 4 months ago I would have jumped at your Trek frame. Now everytime I think about upgrading my geared bike, I remind myself that it has been ridden once since I got the SS. I have nto desire to ride the geared bike.

As far as 29ers are concerned, I need to stop reading these forums. I want one.

One word for turn key 29er SS (on a budget) it even has disc brakes!:

RIG (http://www.fisherbikes.com/bikes/bike_detail.asp?series=genesis&bike=Rig)

eidt - if you can find one! I've seen 'em at 950.00 ready to go!

PutAwayWet
June 22nd, 2005, 04:07 PM
I'd agree with the RIG - if you want suspension. If you want to go rigid, I think the KM is a better deal. You can get better components for the KM with the $615 left over after you buy the frame and fork than come on the $1000 Rig. But you can't get a good 29er fork for less than $400, which makes the Rig a better deal if you go with the boing.

ArmOnFire
June 22nd, 2005, 04:20 PM
I'm not tellin' where a 19.5" Rig is.

I don't know if I'm ready to loose my squish in the front.

PutAwayWet
June 23rd, 2005, 10:17 AM
You can always get a rigid fork (the KM for example) cheaper than you can downgrade to a suspension fork, so if the squish is in your future...probably a good idea to go with the Rig.
