View Full Version : BB again GRRRRR
So I am just riding along. Well, riding along a downed tree up to were it is still connected to the stump about 6' above the ground, when it was about 3' high i hopped off and when i hit the ground both pedals went to the down position. There was a loud snapping sound associated with this event.
Now both cranks move independently of one another. There is no grinding or any other differance with alignment or puling out or wobble. If it wasnt that they move independently you would think there was nothing wrong at all.
This is an FSA Mega Quad DH BB installed 1 month. Seriously, how fat am i really?
I called the shop, Gear Works in Leominster, I will have to go and have them check it out. It would be more conveinent if i was still working out that way. I hope they can work somthing out for me so i can have a bike for Skills Clinic on saturday.

Does BB stand for "bill breaks"

I guess that is how you get the "just riding along" custom title.
You're having a case of bad luck Bill, one would think that a DH specific BB would suffice the 3 foot drop.
now both cranks move independently of one another.
So is that a unknown feature of this BB?
Who'd a thunkit?
Seriously, that sucks, I am in the market for a BB as well.
How is the Shimano XT?
Bill, didn't you have a thread about this before?

Wow Bill,
You are killin BB's! Sounds like a clean break of the BB axle to me.
Post a pic of the carnage if so...
Good luck with finding a fix before Sat.

I guess there is only 2 things that could have happened...you either snapped the axle clean in half or you stripped the splines on the crank ( I say the crank because its likely aluminum and softer and hardened chrmoloy which the spindle is made from). My guess is its the latter...I have seen ISIS BB's take a lot of abuse and yeah they blow through bearings pretty quick but cant say I have seen and axle snap in the manner you described

Bill, I have both a 113 and a 118 mm x 73mm or 68mm (depends on which left-side piece you put in. You are welcome to either (free to borrow - cheap to buy) and I can help with the work. They are just like the pic AOF posted. Shimano splined.
AOF - same goes for you, but this is an emergency for Bill, so let's give him first refusal.

Do they still make those? Until this past year, THAT was the extent of my experience with BBs and cranks, etc. I'm talking 25 years ago.
Thanks for all the help
truckboy, thanks for the offer. I have the Race Face version of the spline and also need an e-type for the derailer on the Klein.
OldSloDoggie, thanks for the "bike " loan. I would'nt dream of making you drag that Kona all the way from Glosta just for me.

Fist off,
Gear Works in Leominster is a great shop.
When i brought the bike in the mechanic recognized it imediatly as the "special order BB" they did a month ago and remaked on how it was FSA's burliest BB. Then he and the other wrench had the same reaction everyone else had when seeing the condition of my cranks.
Hmmm...(sigh)head shake...wow
They put it on the stand right away and took out the BB. 1/2 at a time, to find the shaft snapped clean as if cut with a pipe cutter.
Hmmm..(sigh)head shake..wow
They did have another BB to fit my bike there. Not a 4 bearing downhill one but a good one nonetheless (gigapipe) and installed it for me. The mech went to the register to ring it up. I had my wallet out to pay them for the service and then he takes $18 out of the register and gives it to me.
"That BB we just put in is less expensive then the one you had, We will send the old one to FSA, it has to be a manufactuing defect, I'm not going to charge you for the service.
Hmm..(sigh).WOW!!
Thanks again Gear Works, it was worth the trip.

glad to see you got that issue sorted out. i still think you should get some profiles and your crank worries will be gone. heavy yes, but strong.
