View Full Version : Vietnam Trail Care Day , June 11
splat
June 3rd, 2005, 11:39 AM
The second Vietnam trail care day is scheduled for Saturday, June 11th. The day will be spent building a new trail on the NEMBA parcel. NEMBA has been working over the last 2 months on the creation of this trail.
We have been working closely with the trail designer of Rayburn trails and local freeriders to create a flowing trail that uses the unique geographic features of the area while maintaining the "Nam" character. The trail includes a number of rock gardens, chutes and natural drops. The new trail starts near the top of the cell tower access trail.
We need folks to rake, benchcut, cut back trees, etc., and we'll be doing a lot of rock work. We also need folks to shuttle people from the parking area to the work area and to make a food run. We have the southeastern MA NEMBA tool trailer coming, so we'll have plenty of tools.
Work is expected to go from 9:30am until 3:00pm (but you don't have to stay all day), or sooner if we wrap up early. Meet at the Plains Park parking lot in Milford. Plains Park is less than a mile south of route 495 on route 85. A shuttle will run from 9:30am to 10:00am from Plains Park to the work area.
It is recommended to wear work clothes, gloves, eye protection, and boots. Lunch will be provided.
Click here for a map. PM Splat ( ME ) for more details.
Directions
* Rt. 495 to exit #20 (Rt 85/Milford)
* If coming from Rt 495 South, go right at end of ramp onto Rt 85 South. If coming from Rt 495 North, go left at end of ramp onto Rt 85 South.
* Take Rt 85 south approximately 1 mile
* Park at Plains Park municipal parking lot with ball fields.

one of about 5 rock gardens that need a little bit of Smothing/ armouring

This is a bout 6 feet high with a downward slopping landing , the silver turtle has already hit and and says its Butter Smooth!

I'm not trying to be a wiseguy, but aren't these directions just the opposite ? Shouldn't it be :
If coming from the SOUTH go LEFT at the end of the ramp..and if coming from the NORTH go RIGHT ?
I took a ride up there today. Maybe you meant if TRAVELING south, and if TRAVELING north... ??

No.... Head in the opposite direction, toward Milford center. It'll be on your right hand side about a mile beyond 495. there are some ball fields there.

if we get enough people, could we construct some trannies to make those drops nice and smooth. and that way i wont die if i try them and nosedive like i have before. i think you remember this pic splat. http://www.bustedspoke.com/Photos/bs4614.jpg

yeah, it would be sweet to actually make drops with trannies, and flow, not many places around here have that.
I think I will bring my shovel. It's just the right size, and works really good. I dislike full legnth shovels.

I'll be there. I don't have much for tools but it sounds like we will have plenty.

5 gallon plastic buckets are really handy for moving dirt around in the woods when building trannys - I've got one I can bring along; if someone else has any, please gring a couple along. It's a whole lot easier to carry two at a time than to just have one pulling you all off balance.

The SEMASS NEMBA tool trailer will be there (largest tool trailer in nemba's fleet thanks to Paul Peaslee)
It has at least one if not two wheelbarrows on board, and I'm sure a few 5 gal pails.
I know that we'll also have access to a Block & Tackle for moving large rock, and plenty of rock bars on hand too. Cant wait to set these tranny's up...giddy'up!!

Some pics of a little bit of the trailwork that got done today at Nam. I think the turnout was around 50 people who busted ass in the heat to work on a great new trail.
Good times, good folks.

Who has ridden the new trail? I rode it start to finish Sunday. Hit a few of the step up/down drops. Thumbs up! There are a few places the trail "flow" will need adjustments...only here/there - all of which will come with time & use - & it obviously will.
Since I haven't been a part of this design of it, can anyone confirm this - it seems like it's an intentional counterclockwise loop - and it definitly flows better this way. 'Made the mistake of goin' round backwards the first time, and when I got to the step up drops (among other things) it became clear.
Also, although I'm not hitting the gapped dirt jump anytime soon (the 1st one Dane hits in the video) looking down that chute, it is obvious that one of the leaders of a three leader tree NEEDS to be cut down at the base.
I'm glad I ws able to help out Saturday. I'll be back to help as much as I can.
edit - Oh yeah, now the real fun begins...somewhere along the line as all 'nam things have in the past, the new drops & sections will gain names...any idea how that will become "formalized" if at all?

I think that it flows best CCW as well, though we did take many steps to make it rideable in both directions. Keep in mind that only around 50% or less of the trail was actually finished. It is all rideable now, but we've got a lot of benching to do as well as neatening up some of the stunts. There's a crew that will be heading out every Tuesday evening around 6 to help finish it up. We can always use some extra hands.
BTW, what tree is everyone talking about? Guess I'll know when I hit it, eh?

Hey Dave - this should give an idea of the tree I saw as being a problem.
It's the line on the left highlighting the slanted tree, it's a smaller leader, so it shouldn't be a big deal.

Armoring the trail. If you look in the background you see a nice launch. It has a nice downhill transition on the backside.

CP, Dane claims that tree is no problem. Since I don't have the skillz yet to clear that gap and I have yet to see anyone launch it as far as Dane, I'll take his word for it.

Thanks again to everyone who came out (Jacob, thanks for taking time out of your second to last nam ride!) I hope to see you all again next Tuesday night when we build the berm and finish the jump line. Hopefully the blisters on my hands will be gone by then! As always, 6 PM at the top of the cell tower hill.
