I rode Douglas yesterday for the first time in about 3 weeks and noticed immediately on the south side of RT 16 quite a bit of damage from a fire. When did this happen? I didn't see or hear anything about a fire on any news broadcasts. From what I saw there was quite a bit of charred forest in the area, several hundred acres I would estimate.

I saw it 2 weeks ago, myself. Both sides of the Midstate trail south of 16 where it's wide like an old road, just after where it splits with the Schmidt trail. There was a big area that was charred and you could see where either the DCR or the fire department had moved some downed trees and brought in heavy equiptment to deal with the fire. It's really weird that it never seemed to make the news? ???

Exactly.... As I stayed to the right at the split it was like riding into the twilight zone. Everything around me just turned black and then the smell hit.
Any one heard how it may have started?

I had heard about it about two weeks ago.
I also spoke to a police office, radar trapping from rt 16 parking lot, about it....
Sounds like they may have found fireworks as a possible source
no firm details but there was a lot of acreage burnt

I'm surprised the woods was dry enough this spring to actually catch fire.

It's bone dry there and has been since early April.

That is because it is almost Rhode Island, not almost New Hampshire, like where you live.

Yep. Damn near RI. Actually, you can ride the trails in Douglas SF, cross into RI, and also CT all on the same ride. 8)

I can ride into CT coming from Douglas SF ok. Just can't find that GD tri-state marker. It's probably even more hidden now that it is green again. ???
