I have been looking around on the net for plans or advice on building my own bike work stand...

I found http://www.bcmbg.com/bcmbg.asp?File=/articles/20140.asp It seems like a good, cheap alternative to use. The only thing is, my bike has cables that run exposed under the cross bar and I don't think it would be good to shift and adjust cables while the bike is resting on them.

Has anyone else every built their own stand? Any advice? I have a garage where I could mount something to the wall... Do you think I buy some sort of adjustable clamp to hold my seatpost (like a regular bike stand) and mount it to the wall?

Yeah... and money is a big factor...

Thanks.

For many years I used those type of hooks on the outside edge of a workbench similar to the white one in one of the pics. Not sure why he went to all the trouble of the dowels clamps , etc.....I guess the point is to get the bike out far away enough from the shelf or workbench.....you could mount a 2x4 across the hooks, and notch it the entire length so it wouldnt mess w/your cables.
I finally broke down and bought a Park consumer stand a couple a years ago. Wow! whatta difference! Well worth the $$ ( @ $120. at the LBS), and thats where the bike lives when its not in my trunk or on the trail.......and its always right there,at the right height, ready for inspection..... keep an eye out on EBay ;)...

for what its worth, hope this helps..

Hey Skippy,
I found that a few pieces of wood in the shape of a "U" hanging from the cieling in my shop holds the nose of the seat and then a bungee cord holds the handle bars to keep the bike level, and off the ground.

Yeah... that's kind of what I was thinking, but I just couldn't really come up with a good way to do it. I will have to see what I can rig up in my garage.

Does the bike swing around a lot?
