Any suggestions for good tires for a rigid singlespeed in the Boston area? I'm looking primarily for a little cush to take the edge off the hits, with good handling on the rocky/rooty stuff. Reasonably fast rolling would be a plus, but is probably at odds with cushy. I know my fork can handle up to a 2.7 tire, but rear definitely has less clearance (Schwinn Homegrown hardtail frame with inward curving seat stays).

Try Motoraptors in the 2.4" size. They might fit, they fit in my Schwinn Project Underground frame. The 2.1 size is pretty nice too, you can run it fairly low.

maxxis minion 2.35s. i love them. although im gonna try the folding bead high roller 2.35 when the minions wear out. make sure you get the 60 or 60a duro tires otherwise theyll be as slow as mollases.

Good suggestions. I decided to try a Conti Diesel 2.5 on the front and Gravity 2.3 on the rear. Definitely like the front, good handling, some cush, and pretty light for a freeride tire. Not as thrilled with the rear, kept losing traction in turns. Did a rocky, rooty ride on Saturday and didn't feel too beat up, but it sure made me appreciate suspension.

I was using a Tioga DH 2.3 in the back, it was great, but ultimately too wide for my chainstays so I reverted to Tioga 2.1 DHs. I don't like the 2.1 as much as the 2.3 and am looking for a replacement.

If you can fit it, the Tioga 2.3 is a good tire, though heavy. You have to run low pressure for it to be great (which of course makes it have high rolling resistance). I found about 25psi gave it maximum cush and grip. I know that sounds low, but in 4 months with that tire I never got a pinch flat - mainly because the sidewalls are so heavy. Now that I'm running the 2.1 version I seem to be ripping stems out of tubes. I definitely notice a difference in traction between the 2.1 and 2.3.

I second the Tiogas - my fave tire for years now. Grippy, cheap and durable. Hated the Contis when I tried them - thin sidewalls and super slippery in the wet.

BTW - I responded to this message without looking which forum it was in, I'm running the Tiogas on a FS XC bike (Titus Racer 100x).

It probably won't fit, but I love my panaracer FR 2.4 in the rear. Not as good in the front though, the nobs aren't super for cornering as they seem to roll a bit. But in the rear, man does that thing hook up!

Using Kenda tires here. Bluegroove 2.35 up front and a Nevegal 2.1 in the rear, but the Nevegal 2.35 is calling my name. I was also a big fan of the WTB Weirwolves.
