View Full Version : Wheel issues

I have a repeat issue that is driving me nuts.

I have rhynolits on XT disc hubs, both front and rear. These were new as of last year, but I had the same type on the rear wheel previously and I loved it. Before I got these new ones, my only complaint was that they never need tweeking/truing. What was I supposed to do?

With this new rear wheel though, the spokes will loosen up on me every ride. I will get home, tighten the spokes and true the wheel, and by the end of the next ride, the spokes are loose again. I mean you could wiggle the spokes back and forth 1/2"-1" or so, and the unstable feeling you get with riding the wheel, makes you feel obligated to stop and retighten.

This has happened 1/2 dozen times or so, so I'm pretty sure its not just spoke stretching, but any other advice?

Sounds like the wheels were machine built without any spokeprep put on the threads.

True them up much tighter and they hopefully won't loosen. Your other alternative is to do a complete rebuild and use a threadloc (I use boiled linseed oil, but there are commercial preps available).

Sounds like a factory build. I agree, I like linseed oils as well. It's old school and it works but not as well as wheelsmith spoke prep. I've had bad luck w/ loctite when trying to true, even non-permanent

Sounds like your wheel was never tensioned and stress relieved properly in the first place. You don't really need anything on the spoke threads to hold things in place if the wheel is properly tensioned - but a lubricant such as linseed oil, anti-seize, or whatever snake oil you have around the house will keep the nipples from freezing if you need to re-true the wheel after running it through the mud for a couple of years. And as Tola says, don't use loctite - that makes it really hard to true later.
