My son has a trek mtn 240 24" bike. The stock rst fork has brown crud all over both stanchions and both of the boots are cracked. anybody have any knowlege of how to service these. I am a pretty handy guy.

they are likely super easy MCU shocks. They probably require only a regreasing. I would first remove the top caps, pull out the spring medium ( like I said...likely MCU). The other RST shocks I have worked on needed a LONG allen to fit down into the stanchion to unscrew the lowers. Alos check the bottom of the legs near the drop-outs and see if there is an allen there. If so, remove that one. You should be able to pull the lowers off. Just clean all the old nasty grease out and regrease using something like SlickHoney or Manitou Prep-M. Then reassmble and regrease the springs before reinserting those.
