I have a Barracuda hardtail with a RoxShox Sid fork. It has a 12" frame, I'm short. It only has a 6 speed hub and I would like to upgrade it to a 9. Any thoughts or suggestions?

You need a new wheel. A 9 speed cassette will not fit on a 6 speed hub.

Before getting a new wheel, think about if a extra 3 speeds is worth the cost. Maybe try different chainrings in front ( if the cranks let you).

turn it into a singlespeed for a while and you shall be thankful for your 6 gears after you go back to normal. ;D

Wheel, plus derailler, shifter, cog, chain, maybe front derailler. $250+, unless you have some used parts lying around.

Forgot about crank arm and rings up front. Any kind of wear there will mean they won't mate well with the other new parts. Another $70, if you go low end Race Face or LX.

You also Forgot , If it is a 6 speed the spacing in the rear is way back at 126 MM

not the 135 MM of 9 speed, he Seat/chain stays will ahve to be spread.

what type of Bike is this ?

Thanks,

Its a Baracuda hardtail 12" fram, I don't have the bucks to get a new bike, and I like the frame and the Rox Shock Sid. Would the extra 3 gears in the back really buy me anything or should I just get my legs built up?

Well, I have come to realize that those extra 3 are fairly unneeded. My lowest gear is 22 front, 32 back. This low of a gear is BARELY needed. There comes a point when the hill is so steep, you can't crawl up it in a gear that low. You simply can't find any traction with your rear wheel. A 1:1 ratio of 22/22 is probably the lowest gearing you will ever need. If you have that, you'll make it up just about everything a MTB can.

If you run out of gears while speeding up, then more gears is the answer. That or just be happy with your top speed.

You will need an ENTIRELY new drivtrain. From shifters back. Buy an LX 9 spd. gruppo and some prebuilt wheels or just buy a new bike for a few dollars more!
