So I have been a bit under the weather for the last week or so, not feeling up for riding. I moved 3 weeks ago and have been itching to check out the trails across the street from my new house. So yesterday I take a hike, I see an interesing deer trail off the trail I'm on so I decide to investigate and this is what I found....

So i'm thinking how did that deer head get in that tree? I look closer.... it's the whole deer in a tree (or what's left of it)

I'm guessing that one of the following happened:
1. Snow pack this winter was deep, deer was browsing for food (standing on snow), snow gives way... head stuck in the tree

option #3, deer often rub antlers on trees to remove them late in the winter, this guy put his antlers in the wrong place and got stuck.... not a good way to go

Actually the first option I thought of was
Hunter bags deer, props up in the tree to gut the animal. That would have been a quicker ending from the deers point of view.

Dont most hunters just gut the deer and drag the whole thing out to be butchered? Looks like this thing was eaten in place by animals (all the bones are on the ground)

At one of the Redwood forest campgrounds in CA I saw a 2' long section of a tree where the deer had gotten stuck similarly and the tree had grown around the skull. The antlers were sticking out! This one was a case of theory #3. It was a buck with a good sized rack.
Yours looks like it struggled to pull back out. I like theory #1.

Didn't the alien in the movie "Predator" hang his prey from trees?

Option #8 Autoerotic asphyxiation
option #9 It's a deer from the future who travelled back in time to see what forests looked like. Picked bad coordinates.
Option #10 Deer owed somebody a lot of money
Option #11 Tree sprang up out of the ground
