View Full Version : Coworker's dead cat

Okay, I have a 30-something year old co-worker (female) who is blubbering like an 8 year old because one of her cats died. Is she being overdramatic, or am I being insensitive? It's just a cat, for chrissakes.
"oh, I dont' even want to be here. I can't concentrate. boo hoo"
c'mon lady, I run over at least one cat per month.

It's a combo, you are kind of a unsensitive bastard to her sadness, and yet, she's blubbering like she just lost a child. You need to say i'm sorry that you lost your cat, and she needs to go *sniffle* thanks and get the f. over it.
If she doesn't want to be there, she doesn't have to be. tell her to waste a vacation day over it

People can/do get attached to their pets the same way some people get attached to their children. Sure, it's not a great idea but it just happens. The loss can be devistating for some, in both cases.

I work with a lady who talks about her cats, like I talk about my kids. She does think they are the same thing, t o quote her,"this is my version of your children."
She has pictures all over her cube of them.
Effin' lunatic!
I guess she values the life of her cats the same as I do my kids.
I'm allergic to cats (thank god) and have never really liked them.
Any animal that acts all nice, gets on your lap, then all of a sudden it's clawing your lap.
NO THANKS!
Some people are weird, I'm sure there are people that think I am weird for my feelings about this.
Tell her to take a day for Bereavement.

She's picking up the ashes later today. I asked her if the cat was big enough to at least make some earmuffs out of the fur.
The cat people that really freak me out are the ones who have lots of cats and give them all regular people names.

I've had and lost a handful of cats and really never missed them. On the other hand, when my dog was killed by a speeder last year I was seriously bummed out for a while. He was one helluva good dog and we still miss him. Got his ashes in a little urn with his pic on it and everything.
I gotta say anybody who thinks of a pet as equivalent to their 'child' is pretty wacky though. If that driver had run over my son instead of my dog I'd likely be looking at some prison time right now.

My sister has a decrepid and barely living 19 year old Siamese. It has problems shitting, eating, walking, hearing and seeing, and has kidney problems for which she has to give it a shot every other day or something. Everybody, including her vet, is telling her she needs to let go. At this point, it's a sore issue with my family because eveybody thinks she is being selfish. We dined together over Easter, and she wouldn't even talk about the Terri Shaivo controversy because it struck too close to home.
The way I see it is, be merciful, put him down, and then go to the shelter and adopt another poor cat in need of a caring home.
My girlfriend is another one. Big animal lover. Volunteered for a shelter. All that crap. Last summer she happened to sort of witness a neighbor's escaped exotic bird get run over (she didn't actually see it, but blames herself because she failed in helping to contain the animal beforehand and when she returned, it was flattened in the road). Man, she friggin bawled all day! It wasn't even her bird.
Point is, chicks are out of control when it comes to getting attached to things. It's in their wiring. Better off just trying to ignore the woman as best you can. And staying away from dead cat jokes.

We’ve got 2 cats & if one of them died I know I would be quite upset. But certainly not at the level if a human I loved died. They are both great cats, lots of personality.
When the dog had to be put down, I was bummed but not really upset, but then again that dog was really annoying.
When the nasty, mean ol’ rabbit died, I was surprising upset. But maybe it was just because I could sympathize with her more. ;)
Be nice to your co-worker, you may not fully understand, but she is hurting.

Ooh, the teen years sound like so much fun!
Dreading getting to that point, and hopefully I will have done a good enough job parenting to prevent that.

LMFAO ! oh AOF good luck with that let me know how it works for you. When they become teanagers they immediatley become sociopaths....and this has nothing to do with how they were raised...so don't go blaming yourself! But eventually they become good and decent people again after maybe 18----19-----20 maybe. ::)

We have three Maine Coons - almost as big as a kid. They communicate, have personalities, moods, and give and appreciate affection. Live with any pet long enough, especially affectionate ones, and anybody would get attached, assuming you don't break out in hives every time they come near.
But I agree - enough is enough. When you get a cat, you know 10 years is about all you can expect, and 20 would be extreme. It should not be a surprise when they die. And it is too much to take it into work with you. Stay home if you're that distraught.
With people, we have lots of coping mechanisms - funerals, wakes, memorial services, etc. There are no mechanisms for grieving over pets, so don't be so hard on the poor woman. Unless she's still blubbering tomorrow....

True Dead Cat Story:
The couple accross the street had a cat. Actually the wife's cat and she's pretty attached to it. Wife goes away for the weekend. Cat wanders off and doesn't come home for a day. Another neighbor tells the husband that there's a dead cat in the road, and it looks like their cat. Husband goes and gets dead cat, brings it home and buries it in the back yard. Wife comes home at the end of the weekend and is given the grim news. She's bummed, lots of tears, etc. Next morning they look out their front window and see their cat walking around. Dumbs**t husband buried someone elses cat!
A couple day's later the dead cat's real owner shows up (hysterical, of course) and my neighber had to dig up the dead cat and give it to her.

In my former neighborhood in Sandwich, there was always a missing cat sign posted all over the place. I always wanted to go to these people and tell them what coyotes are, and that their cat was probably eaten by one. What are these people thinking?
I have no sympathy for people who let their pets run around wild. And isn't it law in massachusetts that if you run over a dog, you have to notify the owner? That's bs. I'm not going out of my way to let some dip***T dog owner know his dog is crow food. Unless it did damage, then I may call for some monetary compensation.

I would have much more sympathy for someone who lost a dog than for someone who lost a cat. To me, losing a cat is like losing a fish. but that's just me.
I'm just saying that I'm not going to go out of my way to hunt down the owners of a dog that just played chicken with my car and lost.

Sometimes a little kid will open the door and accidentally let a dog out, or a dog will occasionally slip it's collar or something. You must be a real dink if you'd feel no sympathy after running over some kids dog. Probably a lot like the douchebags that rip by my house every day that think they're so damn important that if they don't do 50 down a narrow, windy residential backroad to get where ever it is they're going, the world will come to a grinding halt. If you hit a dog, it could just as easily have been a little kid.
Here's my last dog Miller and some of the final memories my 9 year old has of him.

Cats spend their lives being waited on. Dogs do what they are told. Dogs often eat out of cats little boxes. I once witnessed my climbing partner's FEMALE black lab climb on top of their male cat and attempt to hump.
Mark -- devil's advocate.

I like dogs but dont have the time and energy to devote to one. I dont think people should treat their pets as if they are children, face it they are pets not people, threat them well just dont over do it.

Well, I figured as long as everyone was making sweeping generalizations about dogs and cats....
Besides -- I like my guy friends. :)
My cat is very easy to get along with and she shows affection even when she isn't looking to be fed. I would have a dog if I lived somewhere where the dog could run free and not be stuck home alone all day when everyone's at school and work.
