I am looking to replace my POS DT Onyx hubs and am looking for some guidance. Obviously, I want CK, but that's more coin than I want to spend. My biggest gripe with the Onyx hubs is that there is way too much space between pawls. I don't care about weight, however, cost is a concern.

sun ringle abbah hubs might be what you are looking for. they are more for freeriding but ive heard that they engage very well.

When I can't afford CK hubs, I buy Shimano XT hubs. They work good for me, and they aren't that much.

XT hubs don't last well. Hadley has trials hubs that are 2/3 price of CK and instead of a clutch have 108 engagement points. Still pricey but they are lifetime hubs. Light too. Don't look for a website, there is none.

Hadleys are excellent. I have been using Woodman hubs for the past 7-8 months and have had excellent luck with them. Engage pretty well, light, reasonably priced, looks nice, nice and smooth...bascially no problems. My XT hubs on the other hand were heavy, loosened up on me if I did anything more than regular XC riding ( jumping, park, drops etc).
Budget-wise the Woodmans are a great option...price no object...naturally the Kings you mentioned and the Hadleys.
