Ok, I'll be the a-hole. Because I know people have opinions about this supposedly great man.
Today it has been divulged that the expired Pope was not embalmed because it is believed that the remains of a true saint will not decompose. Anybody want to place bets on nature taking it's course?
I was actually amongst the throngs that saw him in Boston way back in '77, i think? The only thing I remember was rain and having to stand in line for 45 minutes to receive communion from some schmo priest that was likely diddling altar boys in his free time.
Had to go there. Just had to go there.
Ah, to be young and naive.

He was a badass on skis in his day -- core shots everywhere. Really ripped the gnar, and would hike 5 hours for a 7 minute decent.

My Pope connection: I knew the woman who was shot & wounded during the assassination attempt on the Pope. We went to high school together.

People want to be Catholic and love the pope, more power to them.
BUT,
I dont' understand people taking pictures at the viewing. I mean, would you take pictures of your mother at her funeral? No. These people are just there so that they can say they were there. Somehow they feel they are now more important people because they've been there.

I was pretty much thinking the same thing seeing him in that outfit all week long.

You guys are evil. And Funny. I never knew the Pope was such a kick ass skiier.
I did know that a true saint won't decompose, nor will a witch sink in water.

I'm surprised the lefties on this MB aren’t up in arms over the flags flying at half staff. How can the government continue to force Christian values on the masses?

So many "famous" people dropped dead over the last couple weeks it's hard to "pin the flag on the Pope", although he was a head of State as well as a religious leader. I personally think the flags are at half staff in honor of Frank Perdue......

a significant, respected world leader and role model (for many) has died. For me, the flags don't represent an endorsement of religion, just respect for his death. That's all.

Trailbait, I'm beginning to worry about you. Buying guns, not ranting on separation of church and state, are you mellowing? No it's spring and your riding more.

I've heard the theory bandied about recently that Frank Perdue and the Pope are really the same person.
I'VE never seen them together. Anyone else?

Frank Perdue spent his days at the office hanging chickens upside down and slitting their necks, ripping out their feathers, and gutting them.
Over the years, I'm sure the Pope entertained the thought every now and then of at the very least, bitch-slapping a penquin or two.

They have Cardinal Law - the fellow who protected all his pedophile friends - saying one of the nine ritual masses for the Pope. It really appears they haven't got a clue what the whole thing was about here in the US, or simply don't give a ****.

Of course they don't give a ****. The Vatican exists in a bubble. It's not unlike any other Nation State when it comes to protecting its own interests. Unfortunately, the red wearing heirarchy are pretty much immune to scandals that do not fall within the mileau of doctrine and dogma. They choose to display their politics only when it benefits the church. No governing body exceeds those very Cardinals whose brotherhood is considered unbreakable. Plus, what is the plausibility that pedophilia and homosexuality is so prevalent within the ranks and has been for so long , that it neither surprises them or necessarily concerns them when it becomes public. That it happened in the overly liberal and demanding United States makes it even less a concern for the Vatican. You watch as the Church progressively manages to marginalize the dwindling US church, sweeping the scandal under the rug, and focusing their concerns on third world nations where the future of the Catholic Church lies. Because the poor and the needy never question, you see. They just pray. It's so much easier for the Church to stake their claim upon these meek... for is it not said, "they will inherit the earth"? Lucky for them they also get to inherit a clergy that is overseen by a hypocritical hierarchy.
