I have never felt very good about quick releases. I've heard a thousand times that to get enough clamping force you need to wrap your fingers around the fork/frame and it should leave a mark on your hand.

My wheels have never fallen out, but I constantly worry about it when hitting drops and DH.

The question is: How tight is too tight? I usually get my QRs quite tight, tight enough that I gotta press on that lever with a good deal of force.

It sounds OK to me.

Too tight would be having to use a hammer to close it, and having to use a big screwdriver to pry it open.

I have never had one open on me, and I certainly understand your concern, as that could cause a very bad ride/day.

Conventional Wisdom says that to close your Quick Release, position the lever parallel to the ground and tighten the nut finger tight, then close the lever. That should be tight enough to hold your wheel in place.
