I got a set of Bontrager wheels from a used Gary Fisher I bought here for my wife. The rear has some problems, and I suspect a bent axle. Along the way, some bearings dropped out, too.

Anyone got an older Bonty hub worth raiding for parts? I have some stuff to trade, so let's talk.

I came across a bag today marked "Bontrager". It contains 2 frehubs which i believe are from my son's older Trek. As i recall 1 is original and 1 is about 4 mo of use. Circa '99 i believe. Your welcome to them for shipping if interested. 9spd.

BG,

Arrrghhhh. I'm eight speed. And it seems the freehub is part of the problem.

No nine speed plans in the immediate future, but the freehubs would offer me some options later on. I'll PM my address, and let me know your shipping cost. Thanks!

Should work with 8 spd also, with a spacer. I might have one kicking around. If so i'll send it also.

8sp freehib bodies are 8/9 speed compatible. same dimiensions. it's the cassete rings and chain that are different from 8/9, along with shifters. you only need a spacer on a 8/9 sp freehub body if you're running a 7 or lower cassette. now if you're talking about freewheels, and not freehubs, that's adifferent story. freewheels have the ratcheting device and rings on one body that screws onto the hub. they use this on low-med budget bmx bikes as well as old mtbs. if you can replace jus tthe cassette, then you probably have a freehub, though soem of the real good freewheels allow you do change rings as well.

Cool. May go 9 speed someday, when 8 speed parts become scarce. I am holding out because I bend too many cogs on my 9-speed Giant. The beefier 8 speed ones seem to stand up fine.

Now to find an axle for the Bonty wheel....

See Page 12 & 13 (http://www.bontrager.com/assets/File_Listings/asset_upload_file335_970.pdf)

Looks like you'll need a TCG part number "68531" which is an axle set for 135mm hub. It comes with new cones washers - but no loose ball-bearings. (those are easily avail at LBS)...good luck.

Cool! I assume an LBS, or Loose Screws, would be the actual source. I'll play with the hub this weekend to make sure of what I need.

Thanks, CP.
