I hate to be one of those annoying people who complain about the snow as if it doesn't normally happen in New England in the winter, but dammitt.....

I take it that on Friday morning you'll be changing this post (http://www.nemba.org/yabbse/index.php?board=8;action=display;threadid=5829)?

I find that channel 7 often wrong when it comes to forecasting snow. They always predict larger amounts than the other Boston stations. Channel 5 for example is predicting 3-5" for the Boston area.
Perhaps channel 7 is heavily invested in the milk and bread industry. Every time they forecast a big storm all the alarmists head to the store to stock up.

Don't worry MAC. Local forcast is still only 1-2" overnight thursday. Kind of nice that the snowbelt moved southeast for a change this winter, though I do miss the skiing.

Looks like I'll bring my snowshoes to work on Friday. After this storm there will be enough snow to use them again. I was looking forward to riding either Friday AM or Saturday, oh well back to the trainer :P. At least Wachusett on Sunday will be good :).
If you read the Farmer's Almanac I think this is what it had predicted - a snowy March/April. There are worse things in life than snow I suppose, at least I learned to snowboard a few years back.

Just think, we could be living in California, where all of our trails are being washed into the Pacific.

id much rather have the trails be unrideable for a few months than forever.

actually, channel 7 was pretty much right on several days before the big storm in January, long before anyone else would commit to snow totals. . But since then, they HAVE overestimated snowmall amounts....

I wonder how they compare to a set of Nokians?

My brother installed a pair of those on his bike, probably in early 90's. Main complaints - heavy and out of balance (at fast speeds the wheel wobbled under the weight) and he was unable to get all the cables to land under lugs on the tire, meaning that the cable would bang into the frame or brakes (pre-vee or disc brake days here), they did work well on ice though.
I'll bet he still has his set around, I'll have to see if I can steal 'em, just for nostalgia's sake.

I have a set of those , they worked OK on Pavement , but were brutal to put on !
and Both Front and rear have since broken I guess they could be fixed ( thet borke where the 2 ends of the steel cable meet ) with a little work, But I just have not been motivated to go to the troble of fixing them. That should tell you how impressed I was with them.

When trails are snow covered and unrideable, there is no better option than xc skiing. It's slower than moutainbiking, but its an unbelievable workout, with good flow, and really works on your balance. Nothing like trying to navigate the trails of Blue Hills or the Fells (which you can't even ride in the winter!) on a pair of skis. I miss getting out on the bike, but I can't wait for this storm to blanket the woods. Another good thing is you'll often have the woods to yourself. I got a few of my riding pals into it this year and they are loving it. Check it out, and bring on the snow!

I love backcountry skiing. Even with the snow we've received this year, I haven't been able to go out yet. There was maybe one weekend where I was on the bike and I was thinking I could have been on skis, but with all the rocks around there has to be a pretty solid base before it works - it just doesn't happen often here in CT. Most of the snow this year has been pretty light and fluffy.
You want a real rush, go up to Mount Marcy in the Adirondacks, ski up and down that one yeeeeeehaw. Takes a couple of hours to get to the top and 30 minutes to come down. On the way down you're skiing steeps that are 10 feet wide. Nice. For me, not being all that good with telemarks, its a point 'em and hope kinda scenario.

2-3" in Northeast CT, on top of the 2-3" we got last storm. Dunno if biking will be possible, I'll probably give it a shot on Sunday AM.

Ye of little faith...
It'll be awesone, Jisch. It's pure powder - no crust to make life hard. All we need to do is pick a relatively flat spot. Mansfield Hollow would be fine, or the Snip.

Little faith? I said I'm going right? I still don't expect it to be the fantastic conditions of last weekend. That was some gooooooood riding. No running water at the Snip. There's a bunch up at Mansfield right? I still have to socialize this with the boss.
;D ;D ;D
After the week I've had I need it.

We can dodge the water completely by lapping the lake and heading over toward Route 6. Afterward, we can check out the other side of Route 89, and go as far as conditions allow. If it is wet, we'll bail.
We won't need as many miles as we did in the awesome conditions like last week. Snow is cool, but very tiring. Don't need to tell you that...But I am flexible.
