Might be interested in the SPDs. I've been thinking i need to give clipless a shot this spring. Would you recommend these for a novice? and where could i find some cheap shoes to go along with them ???

I recently moved over to clipless....and you really won't regret it! Initial fears of the inability to unclip will go away (after a few falls!) and you'll wonder how you lived without them. You'll feel like you have more power and control. And you'll quickly learn how to instinctively clip out.

I started out with similar SPD pedals that you're buying (so yes, I'd recommend them for a novice) but I was advised to purchase the SH55 cleat. The SH55 is the multidirectional release cleat, opposed to the SH51, which is the common unidirectional cleat. Basically, you unclip the SH55 by twisting any way, which for me made learning clipless easier and more comfortable. (But if they're too loose, easier to accidently unclip.)

Just make sure the SH55 is compatible with your pedals and that it doesn't already come free with them.... (most pedals come with the SH51s)

Some people recommend starting out with a SPD pedal with a platform (like the M-545). While I own a pair now, I didn't find in necessary in be beginning.

As for cheap shoes, check out some online stores or froogle.com for 661 shoes. Some online discounters sell the "661 Expert MTB Shoes" for 35 bucks. You get what you pay for--they're cheap--but a good place to start if you're unsure about clipless. (I put a whole in the side of mine when I accidently missed the pedal).

Thanks for all of the information Ben. I'm a quick learner but i do expect to fall quite often at first with the clipless. The cleat information has been copied and pasted into my word doc of NEED TO KNOW information 8)
