Just finished hiking on the south side this afternoon and I have never seen January conditions this poor ever. There is a mixture of snow and water covering the trail surface to the point the underlying soil is completely saturated, at least an inch or three down.
Luckily there is a cold front just waiting to make its way in sometime starting tomorrow afternoon, which will bring much colder temps (30's) for the next couple of days. I would avoid trying to ride until at least maybe Sunday. Hopefully things will be on the rebound shortly. Stay tuned for more.

It's great out there right now. Rode a bunch of the North side for 1.5 hours or so today. Some standing water here and there but not bad.

Would have to agree that conditions are 100% better now that cold air has arrived. Sunday's ride was awesome! Snow on the way.

UPDATE: Rode this afternoon on the south side and here is the good and the bad:
Good: Absolutely beautiful out. Anywhere from 3-5 inches of dry powder on the trails. It is very rideable.
Bad: 1. Can't see anything under the snow so spent alot of time hitting and sliding on every root/rock I could find. 2) My SPD cleats clogged up big time to the point I had to finish the last third of the ride without being clipped in. Normally I don't have much of a problem with my cleats, however, today was terrible for some reason. I even stopped twice and banged them on a rock to get them clear. >:(
Otherwise it was great to get out. Maybe more snow on tap for the middle of the weekend?

I have tomorrow off and was thinking of heading down that way, there or BR, or maybe up to Foxboro. If I go to Arcadia I was going to try the north side.
Post here or email - mtbdee@hotmail.com tonight or tomorrow AM if you can ride tomorrow and want some company. I'll probably try to be on the bike by 1:00 - 1:30.
There may be less snow north of Prov - sounds like 3" tops up near Foxboro. If you're interested in heading up there let me know. I'll definitely be at Arcadia on Sat morning (main lot north side) anyway.

Rechecked conditions yesterday afternoon while out hiking. Quite a bit of snowmobile tracks in the Breakheart Pond/Trip Trail area. Packed down enough where I could walk without snowshoes without much difficulty. Maybe a lighter rider could actually ride on top of the snowmobile trails? Frosty Hollow and Austin Farm Road have thin layer of snow which is very rideable. More melting in the next couple of days could make a bit on the soft side, at least where exposed to sunlight.
Most of the single track trails I checked have snowshoe tracks but are not packed down enough to think about riding just yet. With temps in the 40's for the next week or so I don;t expect much melting at least as far as riding is concerned. Snowshoes and/or xc skiing are the only ways to go right now unless you want to stick to the dirt roads.
