Jerseygirl and I had asked Splat to lead a ride in Vietnam today. I invited my riding buddy Johnny D, who brought a friend with him. Splat invited SloMoJo and if_rider and another guy (I forgot his name) for the ride. So the ride went from 3 to 8 rather quickly. We left Splat's house and got into the woods. Less than half a mile in, Jersygirl takes a fall on some leaves and injures her shoulder. Being the tough chick that she is, she rode the whole way in pain. You go girl.

We got to the power lined and Jerseygirl was doing this.

Here is a rock that was fun to ride up and down. This is Johnny D.

We rode along the new trail, and got to a muddy section, and Jersygirl got down with the mud.

We got to a horse farm, and there were things to ride there, and we found this pile of rocks. if_rider did a wall ride that went over the gap.

Splat climbed the rocks to scout a riding line.

Jersygirl had run out of water due to the fact that her bite valve leaked, and I gave her most of my water before we figured out that her bite valve leaked. We spent the rest of the ride sharing what little water I had left and my 24 oz of Gatorade.

All in all, it was a good ride. Many thanks to Splat for being available to lead, and his willingness to go slow and stop for me and Jersygirl.

I'm surprised we didn't run into you folks. I was riding with the NEBC folks. NH NEMBA also came down but we split into two groups to avoid being one 30+ large group. I was riding a brand new FSR Stumpjumper Elite for the first time (impulse buy yesterday while having to '99 FSR tuned up for this ride!), and couldn't ride worth s?!* because the bike threw me off (in more ways than one).

Mighty sad about the AAC, BTW. However, looks like a great opportunity for a few dozen riders to get some capital together and buy the place and turn it into a MTB mecca ;)

She PM'd me and told me that she has a doctor's appointment for her shoulder tomorrow. She had trouble shifting gears in her Element, and she told me that she was icing it while she was posting.

I hope that it is nothing serious, and she gets well soon.

I had a feeling that jerseygirl was tough and that sometimes our bikes through us, but I never thought that it would come to a mud rumble with her bike, with a gimped shoulder. All kidding aside Jersey I hope your shoulder is feeling 100% soon.

Awsome pic.'s guys

Well, even thought I still can't move my arm too much nothing appears broken, anyway. I could use a volunteer to change the radio station in the car for me because I can't reach that high. Shifting's a little tricky, too. If the range of motion doesn't improve in a week they're going to do a little more checking.

Thanks for asking, everybody.

SOunds like a rotator cuff injury.

Slider
November 8th, 2004, 07:52 PM
Yeah - rotator cuff. If there's ANY choice, don't let 'em operate. Watch out for the surgeon's bias on that. Very often, physical therapy - light weight work, basically - will build up the remaining intact muscles/tendons and you won't ever notice the difference. You gotta wait for the pain to subside first, though.

I was not the most diligent rehab subject, so my healing took a long time. I do the occasional upper body workout - very occasional - and am pain free and have full motion now. I was good to ride within a couple of weeks, though. I just had to watch how I moved. Can't say that my experience will apply directly, so take my advice with a grain of salt. YMMV, as they say.

Thanks for the advice, Slider. Hopefully, it won't come down to anything more that a little physical therapy. I'll know better in a week. As long as I'm all better for ski season.....

I didn't relize that your shopulder was hurting you that bad , while we were riding . Give it a couple days rest and I hope you fell better.

I have had both my shoulders operated on for rotator cuff , and Must say they never felt so good !! ( this was after PT failed )

Rip

Sorry to hear about the shoulder.

But however mad props to you for sticking it out for the whole ride, I've seen riders of higher skill levels take a spill land do in the rotator cuff and cry and panic like a little baby and will refuse to finish the ride.

Oh, you aren't the only one who hurt their shoulder, I strained my right shoulder while saving myself from going over the bars on that final descent.

That's the reason I walked that part. I knew by that point I didn't have it in me in the event I had to react quickly.

As far as finishing the ride, the pain never starts until the fun stops.

Just this week, I'm feeling all proud of myself for making it through a couple technical sections in Needham I can never beat.

Then I read these threads and realize I have a lot more to learn.

Rad riding, guys.

BTW, anyone (post crashing) ever have pains below their breast bone? I've had them for a week and they will not go away, hurts like a son of a gun when I sneeze... I know I should go to the doc but...

Cheers,

-Andrew
