View Full Version : Another one in the works

OK, I have a problem with Singlespeeds. I admit it. Anyway I'm playing around with my latest project bike (another Schwinn Project Underground frame I bought on Ebay for $200 ). I have 2 SS bikes already. One is a 32X17 the other a 32X18. This was more the result of what I had lying around than any real planning. So this time around I'm debating going with a 36X20 or something to that effect. I may just build it as a 1X8 as I have a bunch of parts floating around to do that too. The rest of the parts are as follows: Ritchey Logic square taper cranks, an old Race Face big ring w/the teeth ground off for a bashgaurd (we'll see how this works), UN 73 BB, Titec Hellbent bar, Big Al stem, XT levers and V brakes, Kona P2 rigid fork, old Control tech post, SDG Bel Air saddle, an old Crossland front wheel and an old 217/LX rear and M540 pedals. All told I think this thing is going to run me less than $400 in the end. I need to get a HS at the shop, but nothing too fancy. So the question is do I build it 1X8 or as another SS? Am I an idiot? (wait, hold off on answering that last one I think I know the answer).

What about that knee?
I guess you do have a problem don't you.
Didn't you have a CK headset for sale a while back?
Let me know when you are done.

The knee has been feeling really good recently, apparently the PT has helped with general strengthening. I've been riding the SS once a week for the past couple of weeks. I don't want to jinx it, and I haven't run for about two months now. The King HS is sold, now I wish I kept it, I would have used it on the new bike. I'll most likely pick up a decent HS at Providence on Sunday, hopefully Barak will let me use the HS press again. I'll post pics when it's done. Not sure on SS or a 1X8. If it's a SS it'll be a 36X20/or 21. No hero gearing for me.

I have a singleator that I never really used. It only has one spring. I'm not sure which one. I broke the other one. Knucklehead :-[. Let me know if you can use it and we can work out a deal. I don't need it now and it has been in my box for about a year.

bdee, perhaps there's counseling available for you. If so, I urge you to get some.
Why not build it as a fixed? Then you'd be getting into my area of obsession...

If you can find me counseling, let me know. At least Stacy was cool with it. Although I think she has accepted the problem by now.
No way on the fixed thing, I'm not that tough. It looks like it's going to be a SS with a 36X20 setup. I have a couple different cogs floating around and a ton of old cassette spacers. I do need to find another washer to use so I don't need to use the 11t (not that it really matters - besides if the chain breaks and I had to shorten it a ton I could just run a 36X11 in an emergency - that would be fun ::) ).
I should be getting the rest of the parts this week, hopefully - went through Speedgoat in PA, they had some really good deals on parts. I'll post pics when it's done, the Project 2 fork looks real nice on it and they are said to ride well. Picked up a cheapie Aheadset from Prov Bike and they let me use the press (those things are way too expensive - I've got to get off my ass and make my own).

Wow, that's really nice, bdee! You know, it kind of reminds me of that one I saw that one time I went SS'ing with that guy, what was his name? ...oh yeah it was something like bdee or something...
Hey wait a minute!!! That looks just like all your other bikes!!! Whats going on here?! bdee, are you trying to trick us??
If so you got it backwards: I always try and fool my wife into thinking several bikes are actually only one, not the other way around...

That would be a pretty good trick, huh? Luckily for me Stacy just found this one amusing. I think if I paid more than what I did for the frame I might have been in trouble. I think I'm going to take it out Friday morning on it's maiden voyage. Gee, I wonder how it'll ride? ;D I think I'll hang on to my three hardtail Schwinns until Bill's son gets a little taller seeing as how he may grow to like his new one so much.
