This may sound flippant, but I'm serious. Why don't they just let people dope themselves? Why is an oxygen tent okay, but EPO is not? It's the same thing!!! Why is carb loading not considered a performance enhancing process? It is! Do you get my drift? Where do you draw the line?
Here's another of the same: http://www.velonews.com/race/int/articles/6984.0.html

OH man!!! this sucks!!! lets hope its not true

Just what American cycling needs, more drug accusations.

Doesn't sound too good though.

Just to clarify, he is not being accused of doing drugs or doping, but "blood packing". If I understand this correctly, it involves taking some of your own blood, storing it, then reinjecting red blood cells via a transfusion. Apparently detection methods for this have only recently been developed.

It's bad press either way.

"It's bad press either way"

Not to mention that Hamilton made himself out to be America's sweetheart. Was it all an disingenuous hoax? Oh, the agony :'(

Interesting method on increasing the red blood cell count.

As I understood it, the testing for EPO measured the amount of red blood cells, anything over 50 (?) would be an indication that you had used a banned substance.

So I understand the process of the "blood packing", but why would he do it if he knew they were going to be testing for it.

Possibly a medical mistake?
I mean the guy does crash alot, but it all seems to fishy to me.

We shall see....

Is it possible this has to do with the injuries he sustained in the tour? I don't know how long the effects of such a transfusion may last. Hopefully these accusations are untrue as a cycling nation we have just started gaining some respect in Europe

Alot of the accusations that have been levied at another American cyclist involve just this type of thing. In fact the ex-USPS doctor that was doing the media tour in July made statements that directly implicated Hamilton. That doctor was gone before the other American arrived but his statements reveal somewhat the culture that existed then.

Transfusion man from Marblehead? I sure hope not. Hamilton has been my favorite cyclist for the last four years. But, I have to say it does not look good. It is easier to refute one positive than it is two.

This "blood packing" thing sounds good to me! I could use this extra advantage when trying to keep up with Radair out on the trail.

Could I just cut myself, bleed into an icecube tray and suck on my frozen blood cubes before the ride? I think I’ll try it!

Phonak just suspended him - see Velonews. Far cry from their stance to this point. I still have faith in Tyler, of all the people one would expect to come clean if they were caught doping it would be him.

On the news Hamilton said "Why would I endanger myself that way?" Meaning that blood doping is using someone else's blood to pass drug tests. I may not have heard all of the news, but my wife and I both agreed when he said it that it would seem to be a dangerous thing to do in these times.

Today's release by Phonak and Hamilton have the suspension as a joint agreement. This seems to be a very confusing topic even for the pro cycling world It's not doping yet it is bieng treated as a form of it. And also why did the IOC, according to Hamilton wait a month before informing him of the test results usally the results of a positive test are every where in a matter of days :-\

The last part of the link is non-active, so you gotta cut and paste. I don't know how long Boston.com leaves the stories up.

Anyway, you're right Luckybikes. He has another hurdle in the Vuelta test to get past. Fingers crossed...
