Headed up north after work Friday and met up with Kibby for an epic road ride. ;D
http://home.comcast.net/~jrecord/map.jpg

Decided to go for a Single Speed ride up to the pool
http://home.comcast.net/~jrecord/kibby5.jpg

Stopped for a view at the Gorge
http://home.comcast.net/~jrecord/stumpy1.jpg

The water felt good as it was wicked humid
http://home.comcast.net/~jrecord/kibby1.jpg
http://home.comcast.net/~jrecord/record1.jpg

Even the Stumpy took a dip
http://home.comcast.net/~jrecord/plunge.wmv

And yes, aluminum floats
http://home.comcast.net/~jrecord/stumpy2.jpg

Headed out from my camp in North Chatham, NH about 8:30, it was already hot and very humid.
http://home.comcast.net/~jrecord/group1.jpg

Stopped at the legendary Stow corner store for a real man's Mcmuffin. 2 eggs, 4 slices bacon & cheese on a bulky :o
http://home.comcast.net/~jrecord/tourmalet1.jpg

Plenty of climbing and descending 8) along the route
http://home.comcast.net/~jrecord/kibby2.jpg

Stopped in Albany for a shot at the famous "International" sign. For those of you that don't know these are all actual towns in Maine.
http://home.comcast.net/~jrecord/record2.jpg

The route was great with many back roads. Ran into only 1 cyclocross section
http://home.comcast.net/~jrecord/kibby3.jpg

Had lunch in Bethel at cafe DiCocoa
http://home.comcast.net/~jrecord/kibby4.jpg

Soooo tempted to jump in the Androscoggin at the bridge in Gilead
http://home.comcast.net/~jrecord/group2.jpg

About mile 60 mounted a brutal 5 mile climb up Evans Notch
http://home.comcast.net/~jrecord/rides1.jpg

Some great views from the top
http://home.comcast.net/~jrecord/tourmalet2.jpg

Killer 3 mile 45+ mph twisty descent back down to camp.
http://home.comcast.net/~jrecord/evans1.jpg

Jumped on the Single Speeds and headed back up to the pool for a much deserved dip
http://home.comcast.net/~jrecord/rattlesnake1.jpg

About a 70 mile loop of killer riding.

For more info:

We rode the loop backwards but either way would be great.

That was you we saw on Saturday!

Couch and I and some other friends also did an epic, but did our loop backwards - started in Bethel, took North Rd out to Rte 2 ->Gorham -> Rte 16 over Pinkham -> 302 in N Conway -> Hurrican Mtn Rd (on tandems, this is really tough! 16% grade up and 17% grade down - the descent was memorable with a bear sighting and a rear tire tandem blowout at 30+ mph) -> Stowe (we passed the same store) -> 113 over Evans (we were just about to start the climb up when we saw you on the descent!) -> North Rd -> Bethel.

See http://www.portlandvelo.com/white%20mt%203%20notch%20tour.jpg for most of the loop - we added the section to and from Bethel.

We did a total of about 7500 ft of climbing in 97 miles. And it was BRUTALLY hot! We should hook up some time in the north land - Couch and I have a house in Bethel.....

Wow! Small world, I shoulda stopped. You were at Brickett Place right? I was too juiced from the downhill to slow down.

:o Holy crap. Now that's epic, especially in that heat on tandems no less!!!! Hurricane & Evan's on the same loop, CLASSIC!

Yup - we stopped to regroup there before the final climb of the day! You were flying when we saw you!

Yeah - it was a long day! Hurricane was a bear (pun intended)! I don't think I ever need to ride there again! Needless to say, I think we'll take today off ;)

We rode yesterday too - small 27 mile loop from our place in Bethel, out to Rumford Point and back....

We're planning another big epic late in Sept - Rumford up to Rangely and around the lakes. Nice thing about being up north - lots of EPIC loops!

I thought that was you! Good deal. That is a very sweet downhill off Evans. Good stuff. On Saturday though, especially at that point in the day, the uphill crushed me. I had to stop and stick my head in a waterfall to stop the heat induced brain swell (that's what it felt like anyhow). Ooff!

Let me know if you want in on the next scheduled epic, which is the end of Sept I think. PK's in as well. We're doing a loop from Rumford up to Rangely/Oquossoc and back around. 95 miles with a hill or two.

Gonna be any single bikes invovled in that one??

Geez, I don't know is it a single speed only ride? ;)
Sounds like a good loop. I might be able to swing it. Shoot me an email when you know the date.

There will be if you show up and ride ;)

The weekend is 09.24-26.2004 and we're planning the big ride;

http://www.portlandvelo.com/western%20me%20mts.jpg

for Saturday. We've got three tandems in but single bikes are fine also.

hmmmm......

I'm thinking back to Wednesday's cooldown ride and deciding that a lone fat kid on a single bike will be dead meat at the mercy of all those slingshotting tandems :o

Let me know if you attract any other victims errr... guests on boring old single bikes ;D

Cool loop! It goes right by my parents place in Weld on Rte. 142. They're right across from Webb lake. There's some crazy hills up there too!!. Nice long grinders.

That depends...what's the average speed on a tandem?

I'm cramping just thinking about it.

That depends on the amount of climbing. We averaged only a little over 17mph last Saturday. On a more flat loop we typically run about the same as your average brisk paced single bike ride. When riding with tandems on a single bike it's all about drafting and staying in the pocket.

Have fun!

Oh I get it. Brisk paced=torturefest ;)

I'd get dropped like a hot Maine potato in the first 20 mi or so. Probably make it to my folks house tho.
