Running? Two Feet?
Well I got up the other day quite early for no apparent reason at 5am. Instead of the usual 15 miles on the boring recumbant exercize bike, I decided to see if I could still run. Now I haven't ran in about 10 years. I have been doing about 15 miles a day on the recumbant bike, and 100-150 pushups a day and 100 situps a day to stay in shape. I haven't been able to ride my bike all Summer due to constant carpentry around the house and ZERO time. Anyhow I can't walk now. I can't physically walk. I limp very slowly and I have two golf ball sized blisters, 1 on each foot. That's not the root of the pain, it's my right ankle and my thighs. I can't believe that I'm in so much pain. It was about 1 mile that I ran and I only ran about 3/4 of it. I thought I was in good shape. NOT. Anyhow, do you think the problem could be that I ran in Vans sneakers? I've heard that they have no arch support and are mostly flat? Do you think this could be the problem?

The only thing I can do in Vans that doesn't hurt my shins/feet/arch/back, is just standing still and not moving. **** my Navy flight deck boots were more comfortable to run in than my vans.

Yeah running kind of sucks. That said, I run year round. Once a week minimum during the summer, 2- 3 times a week during the winter. Vans for running - probably not a good idea ::). Nice Grandizer avitar Skyline.

"Instead of the usual 15 miles on the boring recumbant exercize bike, "

Yikes! 15 miles. My head is spinning. That must be about 45 minutes to an hour on the recumbant. I can only handle 30 to 35 minutes on my rollers. By then I'm soaked in sweat and start to get that tingling sensation in the nether regions. ::) Seems to me you'd be better off getting out more often even if its for 30 to 45 minutes at a time. Got to be better than that recumbant.

yeah I know, it's just been day in, day out, patio, deck, farmers porch. I'm just about done and ready to ride again OUTSIDE.

Run? I only run when properly motivated, ie, being chased. ;D

These old knees make even a mild jog a pain. Forget b-ball, or any other court sport. Biking, and the occasional surf frolic, is all I got now.

But, take it slow and work up. Nothing wrong with a brisk walk. And the upper body prolly could take a few reps with no repurcussions.

Knees + mid-age expansion = pain, tho.

Knucklebusta, for future referance, buy a good pair of running shoes that fit properly and do at least five min. Light warm up then strech out good before running and you will walk alot better the next day.....and if you think you hurt today wait till tomorrow...LOL...enjoy!!

The winter before last I decided that I wanted to be in some sort of shape for biking season so I decided to take up running. I ran around all the time when I was a kid right? I’d been biking like crazy, and look, there are all sorts of folks gracefully loping up and down my street every day. How hard could it be? So on go the running shoes and out the door I go…..
Ever see the “Friends” episode where Phoebe goes running? Her arms & legs are flailing all over the place? She was graceful compared to me! I managed to get half way around the block before I had to stop because I was wheezing like a broken down horse. And the next day…forget it. :P

Splat, was the triathlon up at Franconia Notch? I was up there this weekend & saw the people swimming across the lake & running up the hill.

Running is for people who don't know how to ride (taken from the old "Working is for people who don't know how to surf" bumper sticker).

Jean, did you find the singletrack goods in Franconia??

No, I ended up riding the Rob Brook trail and some of that dirt road (and picking blue berries). Didn't want to go too far into the woods all alone. :-[

I have the same problem when I go up there. I just can't find any decent singletrack to ride. I know its out there. Maybe the White Mountain chapter could create a NEMBA loop somewhere? Or just mark up an existing trail system? Create a few maps? Cmon guys, give it up ;)

Norm, you cheap bastid! There's actually a new map of the Conway area available at all the local bike shops. It's pretty good. There's also a Rob Brook area map that's been out for 2 or 3 years that's very complete.

Of course, as in any area there's stuff on private land that can't be shown on the published maps. For that you need the loco guide. :o

Jean, Rob Brook is at the opposite end of the Kanc from Franconia! If you had offered that bribery beer I bet I could have found you a guide. :)

Edit - Here's a map of a fine (& legal) local ride. Umm, the labeled blue Xs are intersections; just flip a coin and hope you went the right way:

Ha, I knew if I whined long enough I could get someone to give up the goods. Thanks, and I'll pick up a map next time I'm up there. Hey... just how long is this loop anyways :o

This is only about 10.5 miles, with almost 2200' of climbing. Best done in a clockwise direction.

Rob,

That is a cool looking loop! I never thought of that hook up.

Where is that access off of Hurricane Mtn Rd? Does that head thru whittiker woods and then up?? Looks like you could park at Cranmore and do the loop from there, but does Cranmore frown upon riders parking there???

We parked at Cranmore for last week's circuit - no problem to park there, tons of room & the GM is a biker. This track was recorded on a ride that started at the water tank on Hurricane Mtn Rd. (note the little out & back stem at the north end).

Have you ridden the Red Tail Trail? I think it's a superb climb (I'm heavily biased, of course), a real test piece. Lots of folks treat it as a DH only, but I think they're missing out. There's one intersection not shown, that being the right fork off the Black Cap Trail onto the old carriage road shortly after the Cranmore Trail joins the BC trail. The trip along the base is also a bit tricky, as you have to weave your way along old XC ski trails and condo roads.

Maybe we should do this one on 8/29 as a little cool down ride.... and one of the best downhills in the Whites, IMO.
