I'm in the process of relocating to the Greater Boston Metro area, and have my first job interview in Cambridge on 8/4. I'm looking for some advice on good towns / places to live / places to work and ones to stay away from. The goal is a 30-45 minute drive or train ride to work. Bonus points for places to live close to riding. (Any jobs in Milford?) If you know of any good websites or books that might help, that would be great also.
Thanks in advance! :)

Awsome Steve, you will be welcome always in the southern NH area. I will look forward to riding on a regular basis with you.

I'm looking forward to having all the good riding spots close to home, plus having a big city close by.

Steve, good deal on making the move! Just about anywhere in Metro-West between 495 and 128 should be good and right in the thick of things. Are you looking to buy or rent?

I'll probably be renting, at least to start out.

The North Shore is a great area to live in for MTB. You have the major parks i.e. Lynn woods, Fells, Dogtown, Harold Parker, plus you're a stones throw from the good riding in NH. Not to mention the unmentionable trails ;D.

Can anyone reccomend any specific towns that are decent to live in? (Preferably with access to the train) Natick? Framingham? Sommerville? Lynn? Woburn? etc. ??? ???

I've settled for the country life, but miss some aspects of the city. As an ex-Somervillian, I endorse the place strongly. Within reach of everything, great T access and the best restaurants and nightlife in the city. Get a safe place to store your bike, tho.

A lot really depends on were you will be working and how much commuting you can stand Steve.

Waltham may be a tad... ugly... but it's never been bad from a cyclists point of view. The train is in town, 'nam is a short drive away, 128 is right there. Plus you can just cross over 128 for some decent road riding (living in the berkshires has set my standards rather high, but I am still content)

If your looking for good mountain biking and like the county life and the ocean.. come to Hull ~Hingham area.. which is South Shore an an easy commute to Boston .. be it car, T or Boat.. I get to big city in 20 minutes on the boat..
The Bike issue gives you geat single track in Hingham at Wompy and good climbs at Blue Hills...
Now your most confused with everyone trying to bring you to where they like to ride.. Good luck! Donna ::)

My girlfriend lives in Medford and it's a decent town. You can be on the Esplanade in ten minutes, the Fells is close by (if you want to deal with the Fells...) and all sorts of great riding is within 30 minutes.
The North Shore rules too. It's a bit further out though. The riding is incredible however...

My bikes stay INSIDE the place I live at. ;)

I don't want a commute over 45 minutes, unless I am riding a bike to work. I have only interviewed at one place in Cambridge so far. I'm kinda looking for general info on towns in all directions, to help make a decision when a job offer comes. :)

If you get the Cambridge gig, that city itself is pretty cool, but expensive. Moving out a bit, like into Somerville, should cut your rent/mortgage costs. I used to bike-commute from Arlington to Central Square in Cambridge, and I looked forward to the ride. Arlington has some nice housing stock, including lots of two families. Usually, if the owner lives in the building, it is better kept.
Arlington has a lot more going for it, too. Getting out of the city can be tough, traffic-wise. Arlington sits on Route 2, so you got an easy drive to reach the Pike or Route 95, and those are the gateways to lots of great riding.
Best luck on the job.
