But I guess Kerry's got a more expensive (road) bike. More detail here:

pretty funny.

Think what you want about the man but it's pretty cool that he has picked up mountain biking. It never hurts to have the most powerful person in the world have some personal insight into your activity. He's also sticking with it which is great, given the ribbing he took over the 1st crash.

By the looks of the pix, you could probably pass W on the trail and not look twice. I say good stuff! It's refreshing to have someone like that involved in a sport of "our generation" rather than golf or some other worthless waste of time ;)

I wonder if he's wearing a limited edition Lone Star Lance Armstrong Giro Pneumo helmet (after all, Lance and W are friends I've heard).

Toe Straps?

Someone needs a skills clinic.

The strange thing about his friendship with Lance Armstrong is Armstrong's friendship with Robin Williams. They don't come more outspoken and liberal than Robin Williams. I guess politics can be set aside.

GW should get clipless pedals, and a longer travel bike, but it sounds like he's a racer-boy type. Anyway, he's riding the trails, and that is what is important. Maybe he will change the stupid wilderness designation, when he finds out that he can't ride some really cool places.

Agreed, and throw Sheryl in the mix and you've got some tasty political diversity. It's all good. Bikes and the love of them make a great common platform, regardless!

I hear Cheney bought him the bike. Just kidding, but if George doesn't loose those toe straps, Cheney will be calling the shots soon.

Re: Biking helping to change Bush's respect for wilderness.

Not a chance. He's riding on his own ranch, paid for by the oil industry. Gotta repay that favor somehow.

So he say's MTBing helps clear his mind....guess he should have started riding a couple of years ago.

July 27th, 2004, 05:58 PM
Mtb'ing clears it, but i think the falls muddle it up again. At least that's what happens to me. Man am i muddled.

I rode in Houston twice. Once it was flat (Sam Houston State Park) and once it was very hilly, with "gravity cavities" everywhere.

Austin is supposed to have some really nice riding.

Of course Crawford is nowhere near either of those places.

Good thing I'm not the president. I'd be in the news everyday.

It seems like everytime the Kerry camp is planning a big event Bush "conveniently" crashes his bike or cries wolf to distract the media :P

E-Rich,

Mr. W is riding a Trek Fuel 98 Carbon Fiber, at least according to the CNN report he is.

Set all politics aside, really I'm not going to get into politics here, why sully my favorite sport with crud like that. Fantastic that another person is joining the riding community. The price of his bike is as irrelevant as is the price of Mr. K's road bike. Really. How many gals and guys do you know who's road bikes / MTB cost more than there cars?

The man must be a monster cardiovascularly. He rides 18 miles in 1 hour 20 minutes. Damn. Thats what a 13 mile an hour average? The best I've ever done was 14 miles at Case on a night ride with about a 9.5 mile and hour average, at the end of the season, of the best season of my life, probably about 5 years ago. So 13 mph is pretty damned good even if he's riding mostly jeep road.

As regards riding over his ability, well why not? If you've got your personal medical team there to jump start the old ticker or jam in an emergency airway in case you hit hard, I say GO FOR IT! In all seriousness how the heck do you know when you are riding above your ability? Usually right after you wipe out hardcore and someone points out to you (while your trying to stick that shin bone back under you skin) that "Jeese man you really were riding above you ability there, don't you think?" Well, DUH. The only way you ever get better is to push and the price is pain. Hopefully before you kill yourself you learn enought skills to get by.

All in All three cheers for both Mr. B and Mr. K or any politico who's willing to get out there and ride and stay fit. The one thing this country needs is shining examples in the public light keeping care of themselves. Sets a good example for small dogs, children and couch potatoes. (Nothing like preaching to the choir here, neh?)

Peace.

I see another subcommittee in the making here or at least a possible story line for another Michael Moore "documentary".

I think W should be welcomed into the MTB community as a full time member, because after November he'll have loads of time to hone those skills!

Don't laugh, "Hill Country" just west of Austin in quite hilly and somewhat technical, too. Fun riding! Although I am not sure exactly where his ranch is.

Just to get the facts straight about the "dangerous descent" noted by CNN, here is a topo of the area:

http://www.topozone.com/map.asp?lat=31.53417&lon=-97.44278

At the risk of making a generalization, it doesn't look like there are too many hills in that part of Texas.

July 29th, 2004, 04:05 PM
The way i see it with either Bush or Kerry on a bike is, oh well, most of us have fallen down standing still so give 'em both a break. Like the rest of us are such Neds' or Lances', oh yeah, and they've fallen too.

I would rag on my friends and they would rag on me the same way. Its all part of the fun. Unless someone was hurt really badly then we would have to wait untill they have healed enough to be raged on and be able to laugh without too much pain. (Because we care)

You can usually tell when they are hurt. I say stuff like "Wow, that must have hurt" "You are supposed to get your front wheel over the log first" etc. Their response is usually "You *******"

wow, my least favorite candidate enjoying my favorite sport on my favorite bike, and with more balls than I have! Something is wrong with that....hey, where are the mountain biking lobbyists when you need them? Somebody should convince W to ride without a helmet. Think the straps were Kerry's idea? "here George, try these. They're great!!"
