Couch and I are busy building up another line of stupid bikes.

This singlespeed time trial bike should go a long way at blowing out my knees!

BTW, PK and I finished the SS builds up on Friday so decided to break them in on Saturday.

We went out for a short ride but had so much fun we ended up touring Hollis and Brookline NH and Pepperell and Ayer and Littleton and Groton and a whole mess more. We were out for almost 5 hours. Good junk.

As opposed to MTB SS rigs, I suspect that a road SS will be a good equalizer. By that I mean that they are good to use when going on a slower ride. With the gear ratio I'm running (46x16) a comfortable pace on flats or gentle rollers is only 21 or 22mph. Hills are either really fast or really slow. We found that we were averaging about 18/19mph with an effort that would have probably had us a bit higher on geared bikes.

I think the issue is that with gears on flats we'd be pushing 24/25mph where as you'd be gerbilin to get that speed on the SS.

Good fun though. I'm sure everyone will have them!

Yea, they're pretty cool. We did our 1st faster ride on them last night. PK and I on the SS' and two other guys on geared rigs.

What I found (actually already knew) is that I have trouble spinning 100 - 105 rpm for more than a mile or so. When we were running at 23 - 25 mph it was hard to maintain a long pull and I had to go with shorter pulls than normal. I tend to be a masher and not a spinner so high rpms are the devil! The uphills we hit (mild) were cake and the SS climbed faster than the geared bikes, same as offroad.

All in all, good ride last night. We ran at around a 20.5 mph avg for the 43 miles last night which included some noodling and low speed story telling sessions.

CP, you know you want one. PLUS, a SS has WAY fewer parts so is virtually free ;)

It all keeps it new which keeps it fun. Fun is what it's about!

Nice Rigs!
I'm jealous.
Sounds like fun.
I'll have to do that to my Lemond when I get a new road rig one of these days.
Gears Suck!

I'm thinking of converting my old hardtail to SS, and was going to use a surly single-ator. I noticed on these pix that PK's single-ator is mounted so the chain runs below it, while Couch has his so the chain is above it.

Seems like Couch's would be better, less chain, etc.

Any opinions, words of advice

I switched mine to push up now. It works better.

The only drawback is that if it loosens or you need to remove it on the road for any reason, you need to have the spanner to tighten the spring. This would be more likely with an offroad SS bike, but it should be fine for the road.

As far as the bikes themselves, they're definitely fun. Nice areo position that's comfortable. Good recovery bike for spinning fast. ...or a brutal quad workout if you do big hills.

Also good for riding with slower riders since it's hard to maintain more than a 20 average.

Pretty sure it's Italian for sh!tty, thus the tape over it ;) What do you expect for $200 shipped.

You need to update the pix of your rig with a new one; with the stem flopped down.

Very cool.

I'd almost be tempted to try and ride on the road with you guys now...almost. ;)

Nice.

Makes me want to convert the old road bike I gave the wife into a SS.

I must say , if you are going to go single speed on the road , its gotta be FIXED!!!

the only way to go!!! and then only a front brake ! the legs are the rear brake.

O and here is my single Speed FIXED gear road bike.

Not a good pic but all I have available at the moment

I think that for sheer massochistic value, fixed is cool, but in reality, it's not for me. I need to be able to stretch on the bike (legs and lower back) and that isn't possible w/out stopping on a fixed. You are also limited in speed as there is an RPM point where nobody can maintain a spin.

Last night I rode to PK's house and then we rode out to a ride in Bolton. We were the only ones on SS bikes. We found outselves spinning up to 27 mph or so a few times. That's 120rpm. I can't maintain that steadily but I can spin up to 130rpm, coast a bit, spin back up, coast a bit and maintain 27mph that way. On the flats we were running 23mph or so which was only 100rpm but is still tough for me to maintain for more than a few miles without coasting.

It's all good, I just don't think fixed is for me. I'm pretty sure that I wouldn't be doing the rides I find myself doing on the SS, on a fixed gear.

Splat - looks like you need some new tape on that bike!
