???I am a Midwest rider, southern Illinois/Missouri, married to a French Canadian (Montreal). We are tossing around the idea of moving closer to her family but still staying in the states. I need to have good trails around. Looking at the Burlington area and east of that, within an hour or so. I see ski areas but not necessarily multitudes of associated trails. Generally speaking, what kinds and how much XC trails could I expect to find??? How is the riding season? A lot of times the rockiness of mountain trails aids in drainage but from what I have read about Appalachians, seems the mud/wet may be a severely limiting issue? Any help/feedback would be greatly appreciated. I may be making a scouting trip in mid-September. Thanks.

Catamount is a nice place. Also Kingdom trails are a must, but they are a little bit of a hike from Burlington. Both are definitely worth checking out.

I currently live in MI, but am originally from southern New England. I spend a lot of time in the summers in and around the Burlington area. In general you will be pleasantly suprised by the riding out east. More dynamic. Much hillier and generally more technical than the midwest where the technical part comes from going real fast. VT can be real hilly but the terrain is genrally a little less technical than in southern New England, which tends to be a little rockier. What's also different about the VT scene, compared to other places I've ridden, is so much of VT riding takes place on privately owned land that it really helps to know your way around. There is a lot of great riding all around VT. You just need to work a little harder to find it.

Good luck.

Trails around the major ski areas east of Burlinton are great and plentiful. The problem is that many are on private land and there are no maps...yet. Hool up with the locals and get the tours, go on shop rides. The trails are mostly very techy & lots of climbing but they have a very cool flow to them & once you get it it's all fun. I moved in last year & thought the same thing ?where are the trails? It's a great place to live. The season is from Aprilish to novemberish depending on the weather. Yes it rains, but nobody seems to mind that much.
