View Full Version : Great Brook Farm - Trail on Aberdeen Drive

Yesterday I was riding at Great brook farm, following some of the trails on the park map. I was linking a few trails via East road and Aberdeen drive (which is on the map), and some guy driving down aberdeen FREAKED OUT because i was riding on his "private way". I told him that this route was on the map, and he kept disagreeing. Before it got into a nasty argument, I just continued down the road and hooked back up with the trail.
Anyone know what the deal is with that trail? Is that a private way? Is it illegal to ride on that road or something?

The route you took is fine. Some people are just uptight. The trail leading out to Aberdeen is a section that we just opened up the year before last and it is not heavily used yet. The trail with 5 boardwalks on it is a real nice trail and it is worth riding a little bit of pavement to create a loop out of it. There is a new trail that is being put in. It starts near the intersection of Toffet and Heartbreak Ridge. It will eventually hook up with Pine point but for now it is an out and back. Check it out. I don't think you will find any angry NIMBY abutters on that trail. :)

That is a legal trail and the public has a right to use that street even if it is a "private way". Unless the homeowners property crosses the stree he has no right to tell you you cant ride there.
I live on a private way and my deed specifically states that "the road must be kept open for all to use". This is very typical of private streets.
That guy is just being an ass. Be polite and continue to ride there.

Strange, I've never run into any problems on that piece of road before. I guess paying $2M for a house entitles you to yell at the smelly mountain bikers for ruining the neighborhood, or something.. ::)
I've found the best weapon in these sorts of situations is to remain polite, even while someone's losing their temper. There's just no arguing with some people, even if they're completely wrong about something.

I always seem to lose the trail there and end up turning around and back tracking.. is that trail a dead end or is there another entrance to the trail system somewhere on the street?

I second this, as I always feel like I'm going the wrong way, so I turn around due to time constraints.
Sorry I can't help BenB, but I have thought the same thing before.
I'll be watching this one.

This trail exit is a bit counterintuitive. When you get on the culdesac it seems like you should head right to get back to the park and in fact the park is too the right. BUT GO LEFT.
LEFT up the road and keep your eyes right for the trail markers. You will see some relics of the old trail, bridges and blazes then a double track trail off to the right of the road. At the end of the trail you will be at another road. GO RIGHT, then a little ways up take your first RIGHT. go through one stop sign straight and to the end of the culdesac. Look for the trail at the back side of the trafic circle. This is the trophet loop.
its easier then i wrote

Ok, I had found the signs for the old trail but never continued far enough on the road and/or just gave up and hopped on the road and went back to the center of carlisle on the road or whatever.

I marked up the map for you.
1.off of 5 bridges onto aberdeen, go left
2. go up the pavement a few hunderd yards, look for trail on your right
3.follow trail to end (paved road), go right on road
4.take your 1st right cant remember name
5.follow to the end to get back on tophet loop
