Hi all from Ottawa, Canada,
Just registered. Sorry for the short notice. Road trip begins this Thursday morning.
I'll be vacationing in Wells Beach for 10 days from July 15 to 25th. Bringing my Giant AC2. I'll be looking to ride anywhere within 1 hour's drive of Wells Beach, Maine.
I'd like to ride some singletrack, technical XC, Freeride, and/or DH trails. Night rides also possible.
I've heard about Vietnam. I love riding rock formations. How long a drive from Wells Beach to Vietnam? Crowded? Group rides?

Any advice or info would be greatly appreciated.
Thanx in advance.

From Wells, this is your best bet. PM Todd on this forum and see if you can get a tour or join one of their group rides.

I haven't been to Back Country Excursions in Parsonfield, Maine, but hear it's good. However, you do have to pay to ride there.

If you don't mind a 2 1/2 - 3 hour drive on a good day, Boston traffic= >:(, Vietnam is great and so is Lynn Woods. You shouldn't have any problem getting a tour guide.
EDIT:
Hit the River Trail on the Presumpscot in Portland, Maine as well.

Ft. Rock in Exeter NH is about an hour south of Wells, some good technical riding.
I usually ride on Sunday mornings, and Tuesday nights there.

I'm in Boston, but vacation in Maine a lot. These are both close:
River trail (this was already mentioned, but here's another link):

I think it's okay to park behind Cosetti's market on 302. From what I understand it's out & back, and you can't really get lost on it. The person who took me on this has been riding for years and I think missed the fact that I'm a beginner. I only managed a small chunk of it.
Prides loop:

Maybe someone could help with this one. It's really close to the River Run and you can pretty much get from one to the other still on your bike.

Actually, most of the trails BCE uses are on public land, although if you run into Cliff he'll probably ask for a "donation". Be prepared for a bit of a route finding adventure. Last fall a bunch of the trails were logged over and I don't know how much has been restored.

Ok fine MrsC , you and Shania Twain can stay.
Maybe my brush stroke was too wide, it's those Maple leaf Frenchies that drive me crazy.
Eric Blue 853, I'll give you a good tour of Mt.A, but be forewarned this American plans on punishing your Canadian soul with enough technical XC terrain so as to send your arse back over the border in an Ambulance, you'll be able to enjoy all that free Health Care we hear so much about. Ride with me if you dare and don't pull any of that "eh?", "eahh", "aaaa" crap. While your at it bring me down some cheap medication, ham and crappy beer.
Sincerely, your Canadian loving friend,
Toddski

WHEW! Thanks! That approval was harder than my latest meeting with the folks at the lovely INS ;)

Oh "those" Canadians - well that clarifies even for me! BUT to clarify, Eric Blue 853 is from Kanata which is solidly in English-speaking Ontario!

Don't EVEN get me started on social medicine - trust me when I say we are better off down here south of the border.....

Bonjour Todd ;D,
Thanx for the reply. I'll try to hook up to the site as soon as I get settled in to Wells, so I might not be able to maintain e-communication for a coupla days. Don't have any definite plans (bike or non-bike) so if you let me know when you plan to ride I'll free myself up to join you. Weekend sound good to you?
As to "punishing my Canuck soul"... ;), I'll let the bike do the talkin'. I'll be bringing armor. Should I bring my full-face helmet? 8)
How about I donate some of Canada's finest microbrewed beer? Served in a "stubbie" (old style beer bottle) to boot eh!
I'll look for a contact number when I log on next couple of days.
Thanx again.
Look forward to ridin' out there.

Thanx to all who replied and offered help and info.
Hope to see you on the trails.
Keep the rubber side down and avoid those front wheel ordeals.
Cheers!

Naw, Full face is too hot!
Yo! Eric, actually the crew is going away to the White Mountains this weekend for a overnight hike'a'bike trip (weather permitting), I won't be around this weekend, but there will be some guys meeting at 8am and 9am at the base parking lot, you could tag along with them.
We ride Aggie Wednesday nites at 6pm, also I can ride anytime after 4:30 during the week.
I look forward to meeting a semi-intelligent Canadian who can speak English, I didn't know they existed! ;D

Todd, be careful of the "old style" beer bottle, that's what former canadien goaltender Ken Dryden kept in his hockey pants cause he couldn't leave the ice.

Wednesday looks good. I'll call after the weekend to check in. I found out I'm only 15 minutes away from Mt.A. Might be able to make it earlier during the week.
Have a great ride this weekend. Saw the White Mtns on the way through NH. Looks like fun.

Howdy,
Haven't had a chance to hit the trails yet, so I had to settle for a little techincal riding around Wells Beach.
Had tons of fun riding the jetty (sp?). Looks like a giant trail builder was playing Tetris with those slabs/boulders. Would have been better if there weren't so many people. Also wish a wasn't clipped in :o. Couple of close calls.
Wednesday looking good for Todd's tour of Mt. A.
I've been told to check out Clay Hill. Saw some really nice rock formations out that way. ;)
C ya
Eric
