My crew is heading up to Pedros for the first time and I'm wondering what type of riding I should expect. I've heard that it's mostly muddy fire roads and some hilly singletrack in Western, MA. Is there any real technical stuff? Has anybody been to the Jiminy Peak thing? What's that like?

Mmm, there are definitely no fireroads. TO be honest, i don't think I've ever spent more than .25 miles on a fireroad once I got into the woods. The singletrack around the campsite is a lot of fun. Lots of hilly, twisty singletrack. Jimney is lots of fun. 7 mile singletrack downhills and all that good stuff. Just make sure you go on good rides. A lot of the ride leaders are not from the area and, obviously, don't know the trails. Just ask around, people usually can tell you who will lead you on the best rides.

Excellent. I love twisty singletrack stuff. Any trails in particular that I should avoid? I don't want to get sucked into a long group ride on weak trails.

I personally think you are better off riding with a small group of people. The organized rides are huge with ride leaders who mean well but don't necessarily know the trails. I've had much more fun going with one or two buddies than a crowd.

You are better off to ride in a small group because .The group rides are huge and pain in the butt to ride in .

Well, the group rides do have some perks. One, if you go with someone who has a clue, you get the local special as opposed to the used an abused trails (which will leave you on a lot of fireroads). Good ride leaders will take the group down a few miles of road and then break it off into 2 point depending on speed (I know this isn't always "fair" but it usually works really well). Some rides we've split into 3 groups. Personally, I don't ever remember taking out a group more than 10 or 12 after the split. After the split, there was never a problem (and never a problem of waiting around forever for the group to finish a section of trail).
Just something to consider.
