Hey, I might be new to the Portland, ME area in the near future. Just wondering what the riding is like there and how far to most of the trails. Thanks!

I was doing some work up there, at USM, and Back Bay Bike shop across the street suggested the River Trail.
Pretty good, singletrack, some spots can be hairy, had to hike with the bike. Also seems to be a bit like the game pit fall, if you choose the wrong path in sections, gotta turn around.
Mt. A is cool, about 30 minutes south.
I live in Exeter, NH and there is alot of good riding there, about 1 hour south.
I'm sure some of the Mainahs' could help you out.

In Portland, there are some great trails, double and singletrack, in the area behid Evergreen Cemetary. Not a huge area acreage-wise, but a surprising amount of trail distance. Some great technical sections. Also, in West Falmouth there are some good trails that are part of the snowmobile trail system.

you
or anyone
wanna ride up here in Portland, email me edzo@cycleforums.com
I will blow your mind out with any one of a dozen
super-loops which incorporate all the best ****.
saturdays or sundays. allow 4 hour ride time please
oat nuts park (I **** you not that is the name) and
all 3 sections of the river trail (depends on river conditions,
IE, directly after rain, some sections are under water)
(the 3 sections of river trail with no repeats is 11+ miles).
...yes we will ride the 'highway to hell' on section 2....
congin school. new singletrack built in the last 4 years is insane.
like the fabled PR only hillier and ledgier
prides (maybe. prides and related connections are the balls
but it may not fit in with where we end up. prides is in the
middle part of three major exits off the powerlines between
the sisters and congin school)
hillside
tricycle trail
twilight trail (under Mast road)
**** fields/hurricane road
Falmouth gun club
atherton
evergreen cemetary pre-ride ride
all linked up with other stuff.....
the stuff here makes Vietnam look like
minuteman....
and if you really want to burn I can show you
Black Cat mtn in Raymond. climb city. 17 miles of
pain and a view at the top to die for
I know most if not all the local stuff in Portland and beyond.
you will have a chance to use all your skills climbing, technical
rooty, rocks, and drops. also some stunts like skinny wooden things.
the river trail is totally worth the trip if it has not rained for a week.
there is waaaay more here
than anyone has written about on the 'net.

I can concur the River Trail is nuts. I rode all sections and was floored at how dope the ride was.

Well I didn't end up moving there, but I'm making visits. As it turns out I'm getting married up there. Gonna be up there the weekend of Nov.4-7 to check out reception places. Hoping to get some riding in on Saturday, Nov.6. Problem is I might not have a bike, depends what the fiance's father's bike looks like and I won't know that until I get up there.
Although...now that I'm thinking about it I might just bring my ENO eccentric rear wheel, then I won't have to worry whether the gears are in working condition or not.

Also, thanks for the tip. I hooked up with Avram, Alan, and a couple of other guys and they gave me two good tours last time I was up there. More climbing than I thought was up there, haha.
