Next week is National Bike to Work Week.

For me it'll be more like Bike to Work Weak. ;)

Good one, If_Rider!

Maybe you should fortify yourself by riding to Redbones this Monday evening! It's gonna be a hoot, and maybe you can find out how Keith Bontrager has been able to do 50 (FIFTY) 24HR races!

Can't argue with that...

...though the Minuteman Bike Path from Bedford goes right to Davis Square, next to Redbones!

So today was bike to work day.
Who left their gas guzzlers at home?
I voyaged Hooksett, NH > Wilmington, MA this AM.
Pretty interesting through Lawrence :o

Dude, that sounds like fun!

How far is it? All backroads too (can't use 93)

All I did was get eatin' alive by freakin' misquitoes this morning while clearing a tree from a bridge at Great Brook Farm S.P.

36 miles each way.
Actually, I rode home last night also, then to work today and hopefully I'll make it home tonight. Gonna pick up my car this weekend.
So about 110 miles for the 2 days.
I take 28 bypass>28>back roads through Andover

I hopped on my commuter freeride bike in my kitchen and hucked down the stairs to the NEMBA dungeon..er, I mean, palatial NEMBA towers!

Good job, Jason. With gas prices at over 2 bucks, you should keep commuting and buy some nice parts with all the money you'll save ... and you'll be able to kick my butt by getting in even better shape!

;)

Sorry to be behind the curve on this one, but I had a cool experience on Bike to Work Day...

Was doing my normal commute (Rte 20 from Waltham thru Watertown, then the Storrow Dr path) when a guy pulls up next to me at the last traffic lite. Says it's his first time commuting and do I know how to get into Boston? I asked him where he's headed and he replies that his office is near city hall, so I offered to show him the way as I go right past there.

As we rode along we were chatting and it turns out that he's riding in from Bolton MA, almost at the Leominster town line. By the time we got to his office he had 37 miles on. How's that for a first commute: 74 miles r/t!!!

I told him he's earned the right to order up a big fat breakfast at his desk!

see ya's,
jaime

Gotta love that story. No idea how he's getting there but he's going for it. Just ride baby!!

It'd be pretty cool if someone made a website for bicycle commuters where you could put in how many miles you commute and calculate how many gallons people have saved.

Yup, I left Exeter @ 4am (rolled by PK's house around 6:55am) and got to my office in Acton at 7:05am.

Um, sure can't. I was feeling pretty good about my 44 mile round trip yesterday. Thanks, AOF way to upstage the rest of us ;)

I did have some guy roll up to me at a light yesterday afternoon and yell "hey". I was ready for a rash of sh*t, then he asked how fast I could go on my bike. When I told him I hit 45mph at one point on the way home he was like "hell yeah wooo, yeah man allriiight !!" It was a lot better than the usual interaction.

Are we talking a one time 54 mile commute, or is this regular?

This is the first time I've done this commute, I have bike commuted to other jobs, actually gone years without a car, so I don't think I deserve the commuter of the year award, I'm sure there are riders out there that commute through all the great New England weather that are much more deserving than I.

It was only 53 miles, OK actually 52.8, but does it really matter at that point?

Dan,

If you are only going to do this commute once then you suck & I am retracting my "Commuter of The Year" award ;D

Let us know how you feel on the way home, I've never split a century into 2 parts with an 8-9 hour gap in between. I hope you had a big lunch.

:'( I guess I didn't really deserve the award ;)

I've never split a century either, it should be interesting, do I get extra credit for riding through shady areas like Lowell at 5-6 pm in full roadie getup?

"do I get extra credit for riding through shady areas like Lowell at 5-6 pm in full roadie getup?"

Shady Areas! How dare you impune the reputation of the entire mill city with a statement like that. May the Gods of potholes rise up to meet your high pressure skinny tires. Vengence will be served!! (Frankly, I'd be more worried about Lawrence than Lowell) ;)

I guess I should have been more worried about little old ladies driving big Lincoln Continental's in North Andover, as one hit me on my ride home.

I avoided Lawrence, couldn't avoid going through 110 in Lowell, it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be.

;D I am from Lowell. I would never ride a bike down rt 110 tween lowell and lawrence. And I love riding my bike through lawrence on sunny weekends part of my regular cc loop. My bike commute to work everyday is a staggering 1.7 miles.

I got 4 round-trip commutes last week for a total of a buck twenty.

High points: riding home from RB's on Monday night on the minuteman at 11 pm: dark, quiet, peaceful. Still got my doors blown off between Arlington & Lexington by a roadie who was really hammerin'. Friendly, though, he slowed down to say "hi" before he dropped me...

Second high point: on Tuesday got to use my (new to me) BOB trailer (thanks slaphead) to haul 2 cases of IPA home from work. Normally the only things people in cars say to me when I'm commuting can't be printed on a family-oriented forum such as this, but when you pull a trailer loaded with beer, people LOVE you... :D I felt like a rock star...
