new? under $200? that leaves walmart bikes and really lowend brandname bikes. i think the trek 220 for about $200 but i wouldn't reccomend to anyone who wants to get really into biking, but it's still much better then a walmart bike. for that price, i'd looked into getting a good used bike. try out a few bikes, make sure you really want to bike and get into the sport, then make a bigger investment in a far superior bike. for $400 you can get brandname bikes at good deals. i'd reccomend the specialized hardrock line for a good bang for the buck. jamis used to have really nice bikes that were packed with great specs for the price, but this seems to be different, granted i haven't looked inot any of the lower priced jamis bikes. $400 for a used bike will also go a very far way, especially if you get it as an old backup bike from an experinced biker who didn't good maintenance on it. at teh bare minimum for a good investment, i'd reccomend looking into at least the $300 price range for bikes that will stand a chance at lasting more then a couple of years. also, if you do go the cheap end, remember that it's going to cost you more to replace the lowend components when you pay retail for new ones when the bike breaks down. check out the for sale forums at nemba.org mtbr.com ridemonkey.com pinkbike.com bustedspoke.com most of the stuff at these sites will be more high end, but you should be able to find one that fits your criterium. good luck

Thanks for that information. I'll follow up on those leads. A used bike would be fine. I have an old clunker now. I use it for exercise more than sport, so the weight didn't bother me, but the shifting is a real pain. I don't know what the problem is, but I can't seem to get anyone to fix it, so I decided to look for a bike with better components. (plus, I am getting long in the tooth, and a lighter bike would be nice) I use my bike quite a bit, so reliability is also an issue.
