Interesting article. Makes one hate corrupted governments (although the article did not go into detail about how the "money talks" argument is affecting the park)

At some point irresponsible ATV riders will dig their own grave, unfortunately it will take a while. In the meantime we all get to deal with the trail destruction left in their wake. There seems to be more and more negative press appearing these days, I'm glad to see NEMBA never entertained the idea of allowing them access in Vietnam. In some ways they help us by putting our impact, and proactive approach to trail work and relationship building, into perspective. I hate limiting access to public lands, but after watching parks like Franklin SF become a sea of mud pits and ruts (where it's illegal to ride any mototrized vehicle - btw) I can't really advocate giving them more places to ride. (Check out the Trunkline trail that starts in Franklin and runs to Willamantic, CT, it is miles of whoops from ATVs - there's no way anyone would want to hike it or ride their bike the length of it). Maybe their advocacy groups could follow our lead and buy their own space to ride. This is how it worked where I lived in N.C. The funny thing is where these guys owned and operated their own trails, the trails were in good shape. We would ride our MTBs there and have a good time. The landowners charged a fee ($3) and maintained the trails. I remember when motorcycles used to be a pain to deal with, but ATVs are way more destructive. Maybe the next big thing will be driving Hummers in the woods. Oh wait, then it would get dirty.

anybody ever notice atv and dirtbike riders never do any trail maintenance. just tear it up and move on to the next piece of trail to turn it into a 4 lane stretch of beach sand

I've seen a Hummer (H1) driving under the powerlines at 'Nam. :)

Phew!

Brian I saw the subject and thought it was about our Mt Pisgah in Nboro. I affectionately call Mt Pissa.

We saw signs of ATV in there this spring, but nothing major.
Splat said he saw you in there for a lunch ride. We'll join you soon.

I ride Mt. Pisgah several times a week, 'cause it's right near my house. There has been some ATV use on the lower part (by Linden St.) but it's not too bad. In general the place is getting braided pretty badly -- mostly by bikers trying to go straight where the trail curves, or avoiding rocks, from the looks of it. The bizarre thing is that when that gets done, the place ends up a whole lot less fun to ride. I try to close off one new braid each ride, so if you see new brush piles, it was probably me. People need to learn to love the existing line, not make new ones.

OK, off soapbox now.

Wow, that's pretty sad how idiotic the NH government is. I love Pisgah state park. I run the 50k held there every September and truely enjoy the views/trails. It's funny that this post is about a year old because at the race this past year there was deffinalty more ruts/mud/garbage then i've ever seen in the past. I assume it is from the ATVs that are out there. Very disapointing :'(
