Road newbie question......

I'm liking the alternative riding, enjoying riding right from the house on the country roads...and..

I've begun to notice that me feet get hot right above the cleats after riding hard for a while. How do you folks handle this?

Do you add a firmer footbed.....or a softer??

Any suggestions would be appreicated!

I assume your have a large platform cleat like Time or Look? When I have my SPD's on a spin bike, my feet get that stupid tingling feeling after about 50 minutes.

If that doesn't work, try different shoes. You are riding with road shoes, right?

If that doesn't work, get used to it. Focus on someting else. Let your feet fall asleep. If they're numb, you can't feel pain.

What type of shoes/cleats are you using?

Make sure your shoes are not too tight; your feet will swell up a bit during riding. Also make sure you're not mashing the pedals. Spin, spin, spin. [Concentrate on pushing your toes out of the front of your shoes and then make like you're scraping dog poop off your soles.]

I'm using time road pedals with a lake road shoe...so I'm good there...the shoes fit well, I have pleanty of room to tighten/loosen as I need.

My problem may be the simple fact that I have to toughen my feet a bit to the continuous long term spin that you do on the road, as opposed to the spin a bit..dodge, weave, jump, bounce that happens on the mountian bike.

Big game may be right..just suck it up, get used to it.

Maybe try time mountain bike pedals if you have had them. I love my mountain bike setup (time atacs and Pearl MTN Shoes) that I use it on the road too. Maybe sticking with your mountain bike setup on the road would be a good solution.

Yeah, but....

You really shouldn't ever experience consistent pain or numbness on a road bike. It's usually a sign of a fit or positioning problem (assuming no physical problem, which is unlikely if you're experiencing the sensation in both feet).

You are using good road shoes and pedals, the only other thing I can think of is to make sure your fore/aft position of the cleat is correct.

Or maybe you just need new feet? ;D

When it comes to the comfort/performance dilemma, there's a line between sucking it up and just being stupid.

Luckily, I'm too stupid to know I have crossed that line.

Oh yeah! Man, my writers are really working hard this morning.
