Hi . . . am traveling to Boston area on business in a couple of weeks and have a few extra days to do some mountain biking. Looking for recommendations from you experts on best trails, expected conditions at end of April, cool places to stay away from the city. Any hints???
Thanks!

Hey Susan,
There are many places to ride close to Boston and if it isnt too rainy most trails should be in good condition by then. Specifically where in the Boston area are you going to be? You want to go riding not sit in Boston traffic.
There are also many informal rides that NEMBA members lead, they are listed in the NEMBA newsletter (Singletracks). I wonder if that list is anywhere online?

From the "Riding Zone" link from NEMBA's home page:
"...Our rides are only listed in our magazine, SingleTracks, which comes with your NEMBA membership. So, join us and ride New England!"
Could scan & e-mail, I suppose.

Thanks for the responses . . . you asked, "Where in the Boston area are you going to be?"
Actually planning to stay somewhere outside of Boston for several days but want to locate somewhere near MB trails . . . have heard Southern Maine recommended, Cape Cod . . . so many choices!! Want to find someplace off the beaten path with cool lodging, i.e. cottage or something. Thinking of just bringing helmets, shoes and pedals and renting bikes out there . . . is that realistic?

Susan:
Check out the directions page I wrote: http://www.mindspring.com/~jsb2dc/bomb/mtbdirections.html. There are links on it to maps, if they're online, and there are also pages written on most of the places with pictures to give you an idea of what they're like. The riding should be great while you're out here.

I noticed that jsb missed a few locations. There is Wrentham State Forest in Wrentham, Borderland in Easton/Sharon, Franklin State Forest in Franklin, Viet Nam in Milford.
Try WWW.MTBR.COM and click on trail review and select Massachusetts for a list of trails. I hear that there are some good trails in Rhode Island also.

I've been waiting on 'Nam until parking is sorted out better.
Out of the others I've only ridden Wrentham, and that only once (I'd rather go to Foxboro if I'm going down that way.) Are the others worth going out of my way for? I live up near Newburyport.

Borderland is good if you like technical trails and rocks. If you want a lot of fast singletrack, you will be disapointed.
CP is leading a blow-down ride on Sunday, I plan on being there. I only live 20 minutes away.
When you rode Wrentham, did you ride on the parking lot side or did you cross the road to the fun side? On the parking lot side, there is a lot of fast singletrack with not much climbing and descending. Across the road there is fast singletrack, climbing and descending. There is also some fairly technical trails, too.

Another option, if your don;t have a rent a car. Take the T (MBTA commuter rail mbta.com). On the Boston to Rockport line, there is riding near the Prides Cosssing, Gloucester and Rokport stops.
