View Full Version : ATV's in Bear Brook

No April fools joke here!
I've heard that an "around the bend" technique has been used to move forward (read: go around the public forum)
to get the variance (to a wellhead setback and ignore the filter process) to House Bill 349 passed and allow ATV trails to be built. What I'm hearing second hand is that some state reps attached the variance to another bill (one designed to limit ATV use on private lands) that was up for vote yesterday. My sources say it looks like a done deal and ATV's are on their way......... >:(
I hope my sources are wrong.......does anyone else know about this??????

"The presence of wheeled OHRV's need not result in a detriment to other trail
users, particulary in light of a trail plan that helps set the tone for multiple use
integration"
Haha, that's pretty funny. Go take a hike a Clough state park during moto season and report back how enjoyable it was.
"Trail integration". As long as your trail isn't a singletrack I guess.

Can't expect the same experience at all parks. I enjoy Clough for what is is (or isn't). Maybe similar to why bicycle delivery dudes like to ride in traffic. They have integerated themselves to situation because they enjoy the those surroundings. Call me crazy, that's ok. All trails are not singletrack and all trail users don't necc. require or enjoy singletrack. Look at the numbers, both user quantity and financial resources add the increasing political power and structure, backing. It's time to work together with mainstream and alternative user groups and land owners/managers ,not against User groups need to set a precedene of co-operation or we will all lose. I believe ther can be integrated trail systems. Not all sharing the "same trail", that's not logical or practical all the time. I enjoy hikking, mtb'ing and atv'ing at Clough. But maybe i'm in the minority, won't be the first time. ;D ;D

I don't dispute the fact that ATV riders need or deserve a place to go have "fun" - I just don't think Bear Brook State Park is the place to do it.
As far as I can tell multiple use trails that include motorized users don't exist around here. It's true that the trails may be open to everyone but the fact of the matter is that other trail users are soon driven away - not wanting to put up with the sound of screaming engines in the woods, the smell of buring oil or wide trails with loose churned up soil and mud holes. Hence my Clough example.
My point: Find a place to have ATV trails whereever that may be but not at the expense of everyone else who uses this popular park.

Agreed. Yet somehow on 10,000 acres i think something could be equitably arranged

I agree every one needs a place to ride! Bear Brook IS not a place for motorized use anyone concernered this is our last chance to voice an opionion, the takes place 5/6,, the atv web sites are agressively asking all atvr's to write to legilators in favor of passing sb343
this is the same as sb 349 please write your legislator ask that they hold the senate's position on this issue and send sb343 to interim study ask them to vote NOT CONCUR ON THIS ISSUE..... if you want more info contact me
here is a list of legilators

Thank all of you that help persade the the senate !
On Thursday, 5/6/04, the Senate voted to "not concur" with the House amendments to SB343. This means that the changes to the fine filter criteria that were tacked onto SB343 by the House will not go into effect -- at least for now. I will let you know if the bill resurfaces this session.
I want to thank everyone for your support and for your time spent contacting legislators during the past few months.

See my message further up
they had a motocross race at Bear Brook last Sunday 6/13 there is no way you can share a mtn bike trail with motorized vehicles, in 2 hrs of a slow paced race they shreded the trails and drove out all hikers, bikers, runners and fishermen. and when we left ,the trails were 3-4 inches of loose sand and roots hanging in mid air. If anyone thinks we can co exist go take a look for yourself. and remember this was a short, 1 time motocross race and slow speeds.

How did this happen? Did they get to break the rules because it was a police sponsorred event? :-X
scooter
September 23rd, 2004, 11:52 AM
No, it was specially permitted because it was sponsored by a well-known club ( I think they have a history with the park), and the proceeds of the event were to be donated to charity ( I think Cystic Fibrosis).
Only a few bikes rode thru the park, the damage was much worse than I would have thought.
It's mostly healed over now, though the broken roots are still dangling.
