I am officially a road newbie...just brought home a new road bike ;D! Right now I'm using my time mtb pedals on it while I look into the different road platforms.

What do you other mtbikers use on your road bikes??

I've been looking at the time impacts....based solely on the fact that I like my current times so much.

I use Speedplay Frogs -- switched my MtB to flats and swapped the Frogs to the roadie. MtB shoes are much easier to walk in than road shoes, and Frogs are lighter than almost all road pedals, although not as aerodynamic.

I think there are merits from the point of view heard from many mtn bikers who run mtn bike pedals on a road bike. It is nice to have two sided "no look" pedal entry, as well as Tim's mention of ease for walking.

On the flip side, there is nothing like the efficient feel of being clipped in with a full on road pedal/shoe system. There are two reasons, Road shoes are typically more stiff then mtn shoes, and the design of the cleat systems (typically larger cleat) hold the shoe in a more secure fashion when clipped in, (then mtn cleats do). Road pedal cleat systems dont have to have tolerances for mud clearance and the like, making them much more secure feeling when clipped in - IE: allowed me to get even smoother power thoughout my pedaling.

I've run both mtn and road pedals on my roadie and prefer road setup.
I currently run sidi road shoes w look pedals.

Yup, I agree with the last post

Maybe its because I'm a roadie who rides mountain....

But I like my Look road pedals and stiff soled Nikes Road shoes.

See my link on road rides in the Seacoast NH region if you are interested.

I run Look Pedals with Diadora shoes. i had pair of Nike shoes and they fell abart in less that 2 seasons. I have a pair of SPD's on my Fixed gear which i use 9 and MT bike shoes) at work , and after about 10 miles that small contact patch begins to ache. plus my 2 other road bike , my tandem and my wifes bike all have look type pedals.

To add to my earlier post -- I think stiff soles really help on a road bike; I have some Shimanos with a carbon sole and they work great with the frogs. It's a great combination for bad (or older) knees -- no spring forcing you back to the center, but no play in the system either.

Cool....looks like it's time to order up some road shoes and pedals.......thanks for convincing me!

I like the idea that Time uses with their "stability platform" for being off the bike...a three pointed alking "surface" that has nothing to do with the cleat, but makes it so that I wouldn't be walking on the cleat, an falling on my butt. Also, the float they provide looks nice, just like with the mtn pedals.....and mount on the std shimano patten.

Now, if only we could have a bit of dry weather so that we could get out and ride!!!!!
