Is it safe to ride anywhere in Mass. within a couple of hours of Worcester or is there too much mud?

I'd say its going to be too muddy everywhere. The mud will be bad this year besause the ground is frozen so deep due to the cold and lack of snow cover.

Has anybody been out to take a look at the trail conditions at otis or trail of tears lately?? Things are a bit squishy here in southern NH....but hoping for conditions that would be ok for riding on the cape.

Last I heard, the TOT was real bad, unfortunately.....
I'm doing a 55mi. road ride this sunday. 17mi. average. If you're in decent riding shape, feel free to email me for ride details.

Hold on a minute, define "decent" for those of us who haven't ridden with you. I'd say, in my humble opinion, that you better be in better than decent riding shape to hang. I got the impression last week that you had plenty of gas left in the tank when we got back (I was dragging a#$ to say the least). - Just want to make sure they know what they're in for. ;D
I may be up for another flogging but I'm not sure. I may do a 50 miler down here. I'll let you know.

Hey, last week everyone made it back.... I think! ... and you did great! This time I don't have a time constraint so we don't need to pick up the pace for the last 15 miles. But we can anyway if you want to!

Hi all, I'm new here and also new to mountain biking. Been riding motorcycles all my life. Motocross in early years and then switched to street when I was 18 now 43. Haven't rode a bicycle since being a teenager and now I finally purchased a new Jamis Dakota xc hardtail. Wow! what a great way to get back into it! Rode it 3 times now and am loving the work out it gives me. No pain no gain! I've been riding it in this forest that's right next to where I live, you might of heard of it, The Freetown State Forest! ;D I didn't realize what that place had to offer until I actually went there.
Yesterday the conditions were not bad. The fire roads had some puddles but for the most part you could go around them or through. The trails seem to be in good shape also!
Some mud but not to muddy. This info is coming from a newbie so it might not be what a seasoned biker would report. See you out there!
Oh ya, anybody have advise on a comfortable seat? Mine is a Fi'zi:k Nisene with leather top, nytek sides, scuff guards, and cromo rails.
Take care, ML ;)

Welcome Mike, to a sport that'll make you feel alternately 20 and 60, depending on how you feel & who you're with. It's always rewarding, though...
Watch out for the muddy trails in spring, tracks laid down now can (in some cases) still be seen in September. pk wrote a good article on the topic:

Look forward to riding with you, have fun!

Thanks for the welcome! I know what you mean about the 20 and 60, as of right now I feel 20 again mentally but physically about 60. I'm hoping to get out alot this year, work permiting and maybe can get back into shape and show the younger crowd a thing or two! ;D
As for the article, it makes alot of sense. I actually read that before I went out and made sure I stayed out of the mud, mostly riding on the pine needles and twigs. The fire road had puddles that were hard packed underneath and were being used alot by forest vehicles and 4 wheelers.
My fiance and I will be riding Freetown when ever we get a chance as it is very close! See you folks there.

Hey Mike,
Welcome aboard. Freetown is a great place to ride and dries out quick in the spring due to the sandy soil.
As for seats, keep trying different ones till you find one you like, go to your local shop and test ride some bikes with different seats. Everyones opinion of comfortable varies.
