Does anyone know the name of the small inn in East Burke a couple of hundred yards away from the bike shop? I stayed there last year, and can't recall its name.

Does anyone know what the campsite is that is near the Kingdom trails? How rustic is it?

That would be the Burke Mountain Campground. It's rustic in the sense that it's small and quiet. There's no room for big RVs and no swimming hole or store. It's not rustic in that they have flush toilets and showers (bring quaters for hot water) and you can drive right into the sites.

Any NEMBA folks going to be in the area the second weekend in July?

Planning on spending 3 or 4 days there.

Anyone camped at Burke Mt. campground? And how would you rate it?

Suggested rides?

Dan,

The Burke Campground is OK...the sites have been around for a while..there are a lot of trees...but there is little privacy at any site...they are only about 20 feet deep. It is, however, VERY quiet there.
As for rides...there are so many options. I have a map that I've marked some loops on that have worked well for me...remind me before the next Pawtuckaway trail day and I'll make you a copy.

Thanks John
That would be great, I'll definately take you up on that.

Also read something about Maidstone S.P. for camping; on a lake and not too far away.

Although, I think I want to be able to ride from wherever I'm staying up there.

Anybody know of other places to stay within riding distance?

The Village Inn. I stayed there once last year with the wife. Very nice place run by a couple of very nice people. :)

Maidstone is a pretty cool place, very remote. I stayed there with my wife 2 summers ago. However it is pretty far from the Kingdom Trails. We took a secondry dirt road from Burke to Maidstone - it was about a 30-40 minute drive, very cool but don't head up the pass on an empty gas tank!

The lake at Maidstone is pristine, the area is beautiful and there has to be some riding in that area but we wanted to go back for some more riding at Burke.

One year a bunch of us headed up there for a spur of the moment trip with the intent of camping near Lake Willoughby. The campground there was packed so we found this "camp ground" that was some little old lady's back yard. They had a small farm house with about 20 acres of land, they had set up 4 -5 camp sites in a clearing in the woods. Cheap camping and she had a bathroom and shower in her basement with its own entrance for campers. She even brough us out homemade muffins in the morning.

Cool. Glad I can help.

From what I hear, B&B's are very expensive in East Burke, with most of them going for upwards of $200 a night. For whatever reason, The Village Inn only charges $75 a night and that includes an awesome breakfast. And yes, you can pedal from the Inn to the trails. :)

Did you see the advertisement from the Comfort Inn in the last SingleTracks? They're offering a promo that includes riding fees.

The Comfort Inn is a relatively nice place and is located about 20 miles South in St Johnsbury, right off of I91. St J has many finer ammenities, er, well, OK, maybe not, but I went to Jr high right next to the Comfort Inn. They have lots of mini-marts and a couple Chinese Restaurants.

They do have the Fairbanks Museum and Rotary Planetarium;

and the Athenaeum;

both cool places, as I recall fondly from grade school class trips.

Yup, I may want to stay in touch with nature to satisfy to cave man urge, so I think I'm gonna camp.

All the reviews, etc. of KT sound awesome.

I can't wait to head up there!!

Wahoo!!

OK JT at KT

Sounds great, like I said in the previous posts, I'm planning on heading up there the weekend after the 4th of July. Probably Thursday the 8th I'll be rolling into town.

I'll drop you a line, if that works for you.

From all the reviews, etc, looks like it will be a great time.

Wahoo!

Thanks,

AOF

And all you long haired hippies out there, don't forget to stop in Lyndonville for a haircut at my brother's barbershop (my dad works there too on Friday evenings as JT can attest to).

It's usually worth the price of a haircut just to listen in awe to the steady stream of profanities that fluently and lucidly come out of my filthy mouthed younger brother.

I've never heard so many "F-bombs" in a 1/2 hour as I did when I made my visit to the barber shop. I passed on the haircut but did get caught up on my 4-wheel & off road mag reading. I like the North East Kingdom Pronunciation as well, sounds kind of like "faacking"

I'll add the haircut to the itinerary, sounds like a hoot!
