Has anyone ever heard of this? Apparently they do it in the Fells? I have no idea what this is, it looks like people just hide stuff in the woods? very strange.

I ran into a father and his two kids up at Fort Rock doing this. Apparently there were some caches on the Newfields side of the highway. It does seem wierd, but at least it gets them outside exercising.

Can someone explain to me what exactly it is? Cause I think I'm missing something?

(cut & paste, YABBSE doesn't like the minus)

Not to dwell on the obvious, but did you read thier webstite?? Site unseen. I'd bet dollars to donuts its well explained there. PS Why are you judging other folks' hobbies to be "very strange" before, by your admission, you know what's it all about?

Geocaching is a perfectly harmless hobby chasing down containers in the woods with your gps. Sometimes there are goofy trinkets inside. The travel bug concept is pretty neat. I'm sure that many geocachers have seen me go by on my bike, sweating like a hog, bleeding from both knees, covered with mud, and thought my hobby a bit strange too.

It is hard to understand how it captivates but I have some friends that have really gotten into it. They went to England for a week and I don't know how many caches they found, with trips to the internet cafe to log their finds.

Another similar activity is letterboxing http://www.letterboxing.org/
This seems to involve more skill, in that no gps is involved and you have to come up with the clues.

This may be a more easily understood alternate activity for bikers http://www.half-mind.com/Hashing/who.htm

I stumbled on a cache at the James Goodwin SF. Stepped off the trail to pee next to a large blowdown, and there was a tupperware box containing various trinkets, stuffed in the stump. Suggested behavior is to leave an item and take one, I later read on their website.

It didn't interest me enough to look for any others. I suppose its fun if you like to play with GPS.

I think that its kind of a cool activity that families can do to get out of the house. A kind of high tech treasure hunt.

Your not very open minded. I have a Friend who geo Caches also , and on one ride we were near a geo cahche , and it was actually kind of interesting. especially as to how many people had signed the little book. I myself probably won't participate in it , but I can see how it would be fun.
