on sunday, while riding around wompy, i decided to do this little drop off a ledge of one of the old building that litter wompy at spots. the ledge was only about 3'6''. snapped my bb splindle in the middle. it broke into multiple peices too. no joke. it was a shimano es-70, only about 8 months old. cranks and pedals appeared fine. so i walked my crippled bike out to the car.
i used to have an old i-drive 2.0 but broke it and gave up on the warranty after repeatively called pacific about a replacement frame. saw the komodo frame in a catalogue for cheap and decided to build that up with the parts from the i-drive. that went well and the bike was great. then the bb broke. i still had the old bb from teh old i-drive so i just swapped all the parts over to the i-drive. so now i have an i-drive frame built up. and a komodo frame anxiously awaiting a new parts kit.
some part breaking i take pride in:
-a split rear hub from high pedaling torque (shell split in two)
-snapped octalink bb, in the middle of the splindle
-bent a crank arm
-snapped one of the welds loose on an old gt tequesta hardtail
-snapped a tapered bb splindle at the crank arm
warning about international bicycles:
they were a gt dealer, so i brought the old i-drive frame to them to send to pacific. they stripped the bike of parts and sent out the frame. i got the parts back to build up to buld up the komodo. they lost my sid xc shock and to this day, i have yet to get it back. (got a free fox vanilla r shock from pacific rep though)
i haven't really ridden the new i-drive much yet, just around the block. the front fork (02 psylo sl) sinks about 2/5 of the way through it's travle when i sit on the bike. it didn't do this on the komodo. heaviest u-turn spring is already in there, gonna have to try some heavier oil weights or something.
the new frame seems to have solved some of themajor engineering flaws on the old ones. the seat mast and shock mount seem better reinforced. the stock shock mount bolt is junk though. i already replaced the upper one with a 5/16" steel bolt from teh hardware store and drilled out the shock to fit the bolt. gonna replaced the bottom one in the near future.
it's odd going from a hardtail to f/s again. i kinda miss the feeling of feeling the trail. no more "you want a softer ride? then become a roadie!" (yes i know f/s improves traction and all that so no bickering about the quote.)
i'll get used to it in time though. heck i got used to switching form 20" freestyle rig to 26" bmx to mtb all in a day real quick. still looking forward to rebuilding my komodo though. i think i just build up the komodo with beefcake parts and when i break the frame, i'll swith the stuff over to a hevy duty overbuilt steel hardtail like a minuteman.
