It seems to me that as of last Spring, SR wasn't going to open for the 2003 season either. This time may well be for sure, but I'll believe it when I see it.
I have a hard time believing that last season was a big money loser. Also, it's not about biking anyhow, it's about drawing folks to the conference centers and hotels and concessions. That's where they make their money.
I'll talk to Steve B. (the man behind the trails) this weekend and see what he has to say.

I spoke with Steve and some other locals and looks like it's the real deal. I guess the mountain is hurting (imagine that, a ski area in financial trouble) so they are cutting everywhere possible. Oh well.
I see this as an opportunity. It'll mean that my weekends are mainly freed up and will give me time to do some other stuff I've been meaning to do. Some of us have been talking about trying to get some XC trails in around the Bethel area. Now may just be the chance.
Stay tuned ...

That would be sweet. It's a area screaming for a trail network. Have you been over to the trails near the Wild river? ???

Yep, been there. They are OK but definately hiking trails. I'm talking to the local crew and also starting work on a landowner list. There is a bunch of terrain right near our house that would make for sweet trails. This same land is used for a snowmobile trail in the winter and isn't Ag land so I'm hoping we may be able to get permission.
Will see what happens.

Do you have a place in Bethel? ??? Sounds like you spend a lot of time up by Sunday River.

Yep, we have a house in Bethel. We are there just about every weekend all year round.

Maybe we could hook up for a ride sometime. My parents live near Norway / S Paris, and my family has a camp on Keywadin Lake in Stoneham. I usually go up there on all the major holidays, and for a week in August. There's some OK stuff in the area, but it's all double track.
Even though it's a bit of a drive, did you know that Sugarloaf opens up all of the X-C ski trails to mountain bikes during the summer / fall and there's no fee? I visited there back in October, and just on scenic beauty alone it would be worth riding there. 8)

no such opportunity/silver lining from this rider's perspective. we just lost lift-access to the best DH trails in new england. even though i didn't get a chance to ride up there the last year i could ('02, i made it 5 times) i don't see myself driving 3 hrs to work on xc trails... >:(

You don't even live in this country, so p!ss off you wanker ;)
The road riding is still superb in the area and we'll get some XC going in no time. Additionally, it's only a 50 minute drive to Attitash and 2.5 hrs to Bromont. All this means is that instead of 25 days of lift access I'll have like 10. That means more time to work and ride the local trails (assuming we can get that gig in process).
