My freehub is all gunked and freezes up. >:(

OK, you may say "go buy another one!" Only problem is: this is a really old bike with 7 speed, converted into a singlespeed. Everything is all dialed in perfectly, and I am not sure I can use a 8 or 9 speed freehub without a lot of work. And it's barely worth it to buy new parts for this beater.

I recently heard of something called a "freehub buddy" to clean out the existing part without removing it - by flushing the gunk out easily with a nozzle or something. But Cycle Loft claims no knowledge of such a thing?

Anyone heard of this?

Or perhaps is there someone out there that has an old 7-speed freehub body to spare? (In fact Pete has a second bike in a similar condition, in case you have two!)

Yes, if it's a freehub the Good ole Morningstar freehub buddy when installed on the freehub will inject new, clean lubricant into the innards. Works great - make sure to use a thinner lube in the winter - or the freehub will have problems engaging...cool also - b/c it makes the freehub silent - which I like.

Oh yeah, try wheelworks maybe they have that tool...call around

Bikeman is always my fav source:

It does require lots of work to put a 8/9 speed freehub onto a seven seped hub.

The best source for new 7 speed freehubs is eBay or swap meets Don't look for freehubs, just buy a whole NOS rear 7 speed 135 mm hub. I needed one, I just picked up an Acera one for $1.50 + $4 s/h. You get the freehub plus all the extra parts you can use for that hub or sometime down the road.

One thing to be aware of is that the freehub buddy requires removal of the dust cap on your freehub - and they aren't designed to come off and be reused. Morningstar makes a reusable replacement dust cap, but they don't seem to fit -- on my XT freehub anyway.

I second the idea of just buying a cheapo hub and cannabalizing the freehub body.
