I've never run UST Tubeless, and I was wondering about an XT disc Mavic 3.1 UST wheelset (not a D3.1s but the X3.1s)

Light? Heavy? Durable?

Good trail bike wheelset? Can it handle some small jumps/drops (4 feet max and very rarely at that).

Can they also be run with tubes?

Lots of tire choices?

Any input would be most welcome.

Thanks!

I've been riding the X3.1 with XT hubs for about a year. Currently running Michelin Wildgripper XLS 2.1 (and Michelin Comp S 1.95 before that).

Pretty reliable and fairly light set up for XC. (Not a light as CrossMax, but a bit lighter than the Crossrocs). I'm not into big drops, so I can't opine on how they'll hold up for that. However, at nearly 200 lbs and riding fairly technical, rocky XC stuff, I have managed to bend the crap out of every rear wheel I've ever owned. The X3.1s have held up so far, without even the need for tweaking.

Tubeless has worked well for me. I used to pinch-flat fairly often. Not an issue anymore.

The only downside I've had is faster sidewall wear. I suspect this is due to the fact that I ride much lower pressures than before.

Mark:

I just mounted a set of WTB Weirwolves to a brand new set of Shimano XT disc hubs and Mavic X3.1's yesterday. Black rims, black hubs, black spokes, and black spoke nipples. 8)

Not only are they fairly light, they may be lighter than advertised.

Yes.

Can they also be run with tubes?
Yes. That's a strong point of the X3.1's. You can use tubes if you want / need to.

Lots of tire choices?
Not nearly as many as standard rims. Expect to pay a little more $$$. There are some deals this time of year, though.

same impressions here. no leaks. contrary to what everybody says about usts they're easy to put on. I don't use any extra 'tools/mediums' to put them on. Once the tire is on you may have to roll it on the floor back and forth with bit of pressue to move closer to the edge of the rim, then pump rather rather quickly. Otherwise take it to the gas station and compressor will do it.
They're still true after one full season of beating at efta races..

I'd get the D3.1's
More durable and not much heavier or wider
I have em on my hollowpoint and can't say enough good stuff about them. You can run wider tires on these too. I'm currently running 2.1 weirwolfs but will be upgrading to 2.5 weirwolfs once I.H. is selling the modified swingarm that will accept larger tires.

If they are the same as the Mavic TXC 3.01 USTs that came on my Giant NRS, I'll vouch for the strength of these rims. At first, I thought that 24 spoke wheels would never stand up to my 210+ pounds, but with several months on them, they're still true and round.

I don't do four foot drops to flats, but if there's a slope to land on, I'll launch. So far, no problems.

One tip - check the knurled knobs that the nipples attach to, especially at first. They need to seat in and loosen a lot at first.
