I've got a wheelset, slightly abused, with XT disc hubs that I'd like to repair and turn into my winter/stud combo. The rear hub has some freewheel problems, namely the freewheel locks up on occasion. I'm considering taking the frewheel body off and getting a new one from my LBS (said I could get one for under $25). I've got the hub torn down, but I am unsure of which direction to turn the fixing bolt for the frewheel to remove it.

Anybody know?????

The freehub is removed counterclockwise.

To overhaul the freehub body is easy as long as the pawls and detentes are messed up. However, you'll need a freewheel adjustment tool to unscrew the housing.... and you'll also have to deal with about 48 tiny bearing balls.

I went to the park tools web site... www.parktool.com
such a helpful place! Gave detailed pictures along with the instructions to get it off.

Yeah, looks like quite a number of bearings to roll all over the place now that I've gotten the freebody off plus a new tool.

HHMMM, new tool or new freebody???

I'd vote for just replacing it. Note that you can find complete XT rear hubs online for not much more than the $25 the shop quoted you -- that'll give you a whole load of spares in addition to the freehub body.
