Iam sarting to get into more of a free ride and downhill kind of rider and I no the bike i have now will not last long doing this. Right now I own a Rockhopper FSR XC. Iam looking at maybe selling this and get somthing better for this or upgradign this one somehow. Do you guys have any input on what I should do?

If you are truly committed to riding more Freeride-like and doing some DHing then it may be wise to change to a bike that is designed to handle that type of riding.

But perhaps look at reviews for ones that pedal well.

describe what kind of riding you want to do, and what your riding style is, and that will help matters. are you open to buying a used bike? it will be a lot cheaper obviously than buying new.

that said, a good strong hardtail and burly wheelset is not a bad option. less maintenance and you will get sharper skills faster. there are plenty of options if you take this route. check www.unrealbikes.com for some ideas.

I agree with Narlus, could you give us a better description of exactly what type of Freeriding you plan on doing? ie. How big of a drop? Do you plan on pedaling it far or just doing short pedals to the 'Huck Zone'? What is your skill level like? (specifically: Would you feel comfortable doing big drops on a HT? or Would a FS be better suited to help compensate for less than flawless technique?) Is this going to be a freeride specific rig or are you looking for a Swiss-Army knife?

I would like a hardtail and with a HT i would be able to pedal far with it. I have been thinking of desing and building my own bike sense i can use CAD and i can get some high grade steel for it and my dad is a welder

for a descent fr hardtail for less then $1500, you have quite a few options. i don't know if getting a frame and building it up new would be a good idea because it might not leave enough money for a good parts kit. you might be able to do that if you get used stuff. buying a complete bike, i've found good values on norco and jamis fr hardtails. there are many other manufacturers of fr hardtails as well. i personally own a jamis komodo that i use for trail riding and some freeriding. i've recently got my dad a jamis eureka, the eureka retails for around 900 i think, and it's got a great parts kit for the money (marz dj2,full deore drivetrain, hussefelt cranks, mavic rims, hayes cable discs). both are hard to come by(http://www.norco.com/firstscreen.htm , http://jamisbikes.com/). i got the jamis ordered from bike express in randolph. i believe there is a norco dealer around the boston area as well.what size are you looking for? if you come by the shop, you could try out my 21"
also since a new year of bikes is starting, you could probably get some sort of discount on old bikes if you can find your size, but you might have to wit till next year models coe out if you want a soldout size.
another honorable mention goes out for the specialized p2 for a decent bike at a good value.

if you so decide to got full suspension, good values seem to be the ironhorse sgs series. supergo.com is having a sale on them and prices start at around 900 i think.

Check out landrys.com they have leftover bikes from 03 and 04 i just bought a gemini 900 that is a great allaround freeride and dh bike kinda pricy but you get what you pay for you could always build your own ride but sometimes that costs as much as a off the rack bike like a enduro or a gemini or a yeti vp
